The universe is a hologram and everything you can see - including this article and the device you are reading it on - is a mere projection.
This is according to a controversial model proposed in 1997 by theoretical physicist Juan Maldacena.
Until now the bizarre theory had never been tested, but recent mathematical models suggest that the mind-boggling principle could be true.
Professor Maldacena's model suggests that the universe exists in nine dimensions of space and one of time.
Now Japanese researchers have attempted to tackle this problem by providing mathematical evidence that the holographic principle might be correct, according to a report in Nature.

The holographic principle claims gravity in the universe comes from thin, vibrating strings.
These strings are holograms of events that take place in a simpler, flatter cosmos.
The principle suggests that, like the security chip on your credit card, there is a two-dimensional surface that contains all the information needed to describe a three-dimensional object - which in this case is our universe.
In essence, the theory claims that data containing a description of a volume of space - such as a human or a comet - could be hidden in a region of this flattened, 'real' version of the universe.
In a black hole, for instance, all the objects that ever fall into it would be entirely contained in surface fluctuations, almost like a piece of computer memory on contained in a chip.
In a larger sense, the theory suggests that the entire universe can be seen as a 'two-dimensional structure projected onto a cosmological horizon' - or in simpler terms, a projection.
If we could understand the laws that govern physics on that distant surface, the principle suggests we would grasp all there is to know about reality.
I’m no scientest but this sounds like something from Rod Serling.
Another one claiming we don’t really exist. pffft
The concepts of dimension and orthogonality are constructs, a consequence of the human way of perceiving the universe. They are valid perceptions but are also limited, and perhaps limiting.
Sounds pretty ridiculous...please don’t tell me people get paid for this nonsense.
Physicists don’t necessarily believe this. Its one theory among many and it doesn’t make much sense to me or them.
...or Plato’s cave wall .
I saw this movie......it was called The Matrix....
If we position a mirror correctly can we shoot the image of Barack Obama back into the ether toward his real home planet?
Take the red pill.....
You are living in a dream world Neo.

Let my buddy east some Brussels Sprouts and these brainiacs would know that the only projection in their face would be the lethal gasses from my buddy,
Sounds more like Plato.
I am reminded why I became a life scientist, not a physicist.
As a Christian I see this life as a sort of videogame. It “feels” real, but it is not “the” reality. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t have consequences, but since I’ve embraced the “matrix” concept since I saw the movie, this would not surprise me.
When talking to children about reality, it’s fun to point out that reality really is only perception. After all, the atoms in your hand never really touch the atoms of the keys on the keyboard. It only feels like it. If they actually touched, bad things could happen. And what you see is nothing but light bouncing off other atoms and interpreted by your brain, via what sends the signal there, as solid objects, etc.
And everything is mostly empty space, dispite it looks quite hard and if some things “hit” you hard enough, it’s game over.
I think this whole “reality isn’t what we think it is” meme is closer to the truth than we think. Truth be told, I think it is actively held together by God and when he decides to blink, it will all go away, in the way described in biblical prophesy.
That’s why I think it is so “cute” when anti-Christian “scientists” argue that religion isn’t science. No, it’s not. It is a much higher pursuit than science.
I think the headline is a bit sensationalistic. As if all physicists believe this pap.
