An idea hatched around a Dallas swimming pool 50 years ago has blossomed into one of the worlds most prestigious scientific conferences.
Starting Sunday, more than 450 experts on gravity, black holes and the newly discovered Higgs boson the subject of this years Nobel Prize in physics will gather at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Dallas to discuss the newest findings and most pressing mysteries in their fields

I hope they focus on what exactly gravity is. Resolving the Grand Unified Theory problem would be very cool!
“Resolving the Grand Unified Theory problem would be very cool!”
Or even more groundbreaking... what causes that double-post thing on FR.
:-)
I would be satisfied knowing why my snowblower won’t start unless it’s warm.
In Dallas? Lets hope they are not talking about no black holes.
...dissect matter, space, time...
Hey! Wait there pal, I’m using that stuff...
Sounds like a neat conference. They have opened it to the public which is nice. I wonder if they will put it up on Youtube.
Snip...
The universe on speed
One of the most pressing questions for astronomers is why the universe appears to be expanding faster and faster. Researchers made the discovery in 1998 and won the Nobel Prize for their work in 2011. That was an amazing, counterintuitive discovery, says Kolb. Whether people admit it or not, every cosmologist expected the expansion to slow down because gravity should act to pull everything back together.
Scientists believe an invisible force called dark energy is driving the quickening expansion. While much of space may look empty, Einstein predicted that it had mass. If empty space has a mass, it also has a pressure that pushes space apart, says Kolb, who will deliver a public lecture on the unseen universe at UTD on Wednesday evening. Scientists at the symposium will discuss how to design experiments to improve their understanding of dark energy.
done.
This will likely be a re-creation of the Salk Institute conferences.

Just one example.
There is so much more:

Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, deGrasse Tyson and more intellectuals bashing religion.
Mark my words:
This event will be a platform for the promotion of “POP Science” and an unchallenged attack on religion.
Mark my words.
If the Deadites gain control of the Necronomicron at this conference, well, a terrible evil shall befall humankind and more stuff, harrumph.
Did you say the words?
Klaatu... Verata... Necktie.
The result will be 28 lbs of belly button fuzz.
Conclusion?.........islam is a true religion, all roads lead to islam no? Kinda like the kevin bacon game
I'd like to hear what their conversations are like in the bar during happy hour after a few drinks....LOL!
I knew Sheldon was on to something...
That was funny!
It's Bush's fault.
I attended one of these in the mid nineties at the Smithsonian in DC. It was a good thing that I read all of the papers and background info before going. Not really something a low-information voter could just walk into.
