Commentary: Elton blames Southern and religious bigotry for the continuing plague of HIV-AIDS in the U.S. and around the world. John ignores the role of personal behavior, instead he blames others: "Make no mistake: Discrimination and intolerance fuel this disease."
John links to a Kaiser Family Foundation study to assert that seven of the ten states with the highest diagnoses of HIV are Southern. However, the study shows only five Southern states in the top ten with the liberal mecca the District of Columbia having an astonishing 177.9 infection rate per 100,000--five to six times the average for states.
The Kaiser study is worth taking the time to examine. It's too bad Elton is caught in his own bigotry. His article was meant to inform about the great strides that have been made treating HIV-AIDS, instead he had a tantrum.

OK....what sets the South and DC apart from the rest of the country? Very large Black populations. Is it possible that HIV is becoming, or has become, a largely Black disease? If so, it’s news to me.

No, but seriously, my Dad and I stopped there on the way to my first year of college, and had a nice catfish dinner and met pleasant people. There’s also a University there. My friend’s daughter went to ballet camp there this year.

So it looks like there is an HIV problem in the Black community.....now, what is that problem? Education? Lifestyle? Other? I don’t know.
Well I know here Alabama is and you usually find anywhere in the world (if you are not a snob) that the hardworking poor are the nicest people. I live in Australia - my son moved from Adelaide to live in a Melbourne in a place called Frankston. It is supposed to be the pits of Melbourne - turned out to be one of the few places I like because the people will talk to you if you speak to them. The rest of Melbourne is full of latte sipping metrosexuals.

Tuscaloosa was nice, back in the early 80s. It’s probably bigger now. The name means “Black Warrior,” referring to the Creek Indians. That’s the same language in which Oklahoma means “red dirt.”
Alabama used to have an awful homeschooling law, so bad that people on the border would register in Tennessee instead. I understand they’ve improved it in the last few years.
