Not really surprising. Realistically, it's the only way to mitigate the economic and political damage of the snafu.

It doesn’t surprise me, but it could be spun favorably if the GOP had brains/balls.

The dems didn’t need a “clean CR” for this, did they?

Like everyone knew all along, it is nothing more than a paid vacation.

But the National Guard troops who are missing drills, and contractors who are providing a large fraction of our national security, they won’t get paid.

Bassackwards.

Whole damn country is being built around people being paid to do nothing.
Do nothing, worth nothing.

Republicans always make it easy on democrats.

They should have attached this to a few other issues - like keeping the memorials open, the bill to restore funding for cancer treatment at the National Institutes of Health, etc.

He was right. One lives inside the D.C. beltway, sucking the lifeblood from the other outside the D.C. beltway.

So the government shutdown is really a taxpayer funded government vacation!

Let me see if I’ve got this straight.

“Essential” government workers must go to work but will receive an “IOU” on payday instead of a paycheck.

“Non-essential” government workers are to stay home and not go to work, but will also receive an “IOU” on payday instead of a paycheck.

It won’t be the first time the taxpayers have paid government employees for doing nothing.

Whatever, though they will likely feel the pain till the logjam clears. The Senate may be too stuck up to pass this, they have said they will not pass partial budget resolutions.

As for me, I’d sooner, in a vague vein like C. S. Lewis, pay them for nothing than for a nuisance.

Also the more this keeps up, the more pregnant the question of “Just what do I need all these people for anyhow? The earth didn’t cave in!”

Furloughed workers should not get back pay. Instead they should get a small amount of severance pay. If they are not essential then they should not be working for the government. No exceptions for sentiment of fairness. 90% of the federal workforce should be placed back into the private world.

Take it out of their vacation allowance, if they’re going to get paid. They should not be paid for work they did not do. If they’re going to be on paid vacation now, then they should not be allowed to get paid vacation for the rest of the year.

IRS workers, for instance, should be told that their boss, Lois Lerner, decided to piss on the people so the people decided not to buy the “company’s services”, causing layoffs. Welcome to the real world.

I fully expect to see this man, Edwards, try to revive his political career. John Edwards is not done yet. He is wise to lay low for what remains of this Bad Trip of a presidency. You see what fools Weiner and Number 9 made of themselves last summer. Those two are now ‘Double-Damned in the eyes of the public.

I sense there is still great deal of ambition in whatever he now uses for a heart. He misses the fawning admiration his presence used to command. Edwards probably sees what that Nut Ball Sanford did next door in South Carolina and has got to be wondering, ‘What do I have to do, go on Oprah with my own box of tissues? How can I make them want me again?”

I was just saying to my husband just a couple hours ago, that there are 2 Americas: the one that gets their news from the treasonous drive-by media, and the one that gets its news from documentary videos and photos posted online to prove what is REALLY happening.

None of this stuff would happen if the DC folks had any fear that the media would actually do its job rather than kissing the rear ends of the politicians they sleep with.

Yes. Van Holen just up stating he can’t believe the irresponsibility of the Republican leadership for wanting to pay people for staying home.

Topsyturvy.

One of the Reps stated goals is to send bills one at a time. If they start bundling them, that falls by the wayside.

All you do is complain! That is all you do. You complain abou nonessential people should be fired, yet you complain that contract priests can’t say mass. That a few memorials are closed. And a few parks and beaches are closed. Look you see nonessential people fired then stop complaint about a memorial being closed. This is what you hope and pray for. Oh I forgot about the Air Force Navy game you cried about that was pooibly cancelled. This is one reason why we will never balance the budget. You have pet projects. Liberals have pet projects and God forbid you miss the day at the beach. Good day!!!!!!
