Egypt's sorry excuse for "democracy" has gone the way of the pharaohs after Friday's military coup. Good riddance. Coups are the only way out of fake democracies. But what's the way out of coups?
The big risk in Egypt is that the same corruption, special interests and disillusion will return after the military coup that threw the Muslim Brotherhood's odious Mohamed Morsi out of power. Egypt's men in uniform again showed that only two political forces really matter in Egypt Islamofascists like Morsi and the secular military.
Had Chilean military commander Augusto Pinochet simply handed the country back to "democracy" without changing the root causes of the turmoil and tyranny, the cycle would have had a replay.
Allende foreshadowed Morsi, demolishing political institutions, trampling the free press, disrespecting minority rights, ignoring the constitution, disregarding the separation of powers, trashing property rights and ruining the economy. Also, Allende was in thrall to a failed and inhuman foreign ideology communism just as Morsi was to Islamofascism. In both cases, the only exit was a military coup.

What would Obama have said about Allende?
Egypt should try grabbing a random guy off the street each month to be prezzy for a month.
Chile was not a banana republic.
Wishful thinking. Augusto Pinochet was the right man in the right place at the right time. He was very unique, one of the few dictators in history to eventually give up his power voluntarily. Is there a Pinochet within the Egyptian military? Perhaps, but unlikely.
The best we can hope for in Egypt is a military-backed strong man with the sense to enforce the peace with Israel, beat back the jihadi fanatics and protect Coptic rights. The kind of leader the CIA once was good at “installing”—before Frank Church and the loony left took over.
Believe me, as a leftist, Bambi was a big Allende fan.
Pinochet did a good job. Were there abuses committed? Probably. But virtually none of the people whining about mistreatment of their relatives had relatives who were “innocents.” Most of them were working with cells in their universities or with foreign influences to try to hand Chile over to the Marxists again.
And Chile has probably been the most successful country in Latin America for some time now, the least destroyed by Marxism or populist nationalism, and on the whole, a success story.
Even so, he was villfied by the left for having prevented a Communist takeover in Chile.
Yes, well the left vilifies anyone who prevents them from expanding government to the point of mass slaughter.
Allende foreshadowed Morsi, demolishing political institutions, trampling the free press, disrespecting minority rights, ignoring the constitution, disregarding the separation of powers, trashing property rights and ruining the economy. Also, Allende was in thrall to a failed and inhuman foreign ideology -- communism -- just as Morsi was to Islamofascism. In both cases, the only exit was a military coup.
“demolishing political institutions, trampling the free press, disrespecting minority rights, ignoring the constitution, disregarding the separation of powers, trashing property rights and ruining the economy”
A lot of this sounds familiar to me. Where does it sound like?
Anyone have any ideas?
their officers should avoid wearing overly large ridiculous looking caps.
Chile also has PRIVATIZED SOCIAL SECURITY.
My thoughts exactly. Hauntingly familiar... Let’s see...
Oh, yeah. o’bozo, or rather his puppet masters.
