Senate votes 82-15 in first step to debate immigration reform
The Hill ^ | June 11, 2013 | Ramsey Cox

The Senate voted 82-15 on Tuesday to end debate on a motion to proceed to a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

The Senate is expected to continue work on the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act throughout June. The next vote will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday — that will be on the actual motion to proceed to the bill.

The four Republican members of the Gang of Eight — Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Jeff Flake (R- Ariz.) — were joined by more than 20 other GOP senators in voting to advance the debate. That strong support is expected to dwindle if certain amendments aren't agreed to.

"As an elected leader in my party, it’s my view that we at least need to try to improve a situation that as far as I can tell very few people believe is working well either for our own citizens, or for those around the world who aspire to become Americans," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said ahead of the vote Tuesday. "I’ll vote to debate it and for the opportunity to amend it, but in the days ahead there will need to be major changes to this bill if it’s going to become law."

Boehner said he believes that passing an immigration bill in the House is the most important thing on his agenda this year. He added that he expects Obama to sign a bill by the end of the year.

“I’m hopeful that we’ll have a product come out of the committee by the end of June,” Bohener said. “I believe that it’s important for the House to work its will on this issue. And I would expect that a House bill will be to the right of where the Senate is.”

The IRS rigged the 2012 election by preventing conservative groups from getting started

And just for good measure, the NSA hacked the voting machines.

Procedurally, do they have to vote again on cloture after the bill is debated and amended on the Senate floor? Or will it take just 51 votes to get out of the Senate?

They have to vote once to start debate (60 votes), once to end debate (60 votes) and then once on the bill, if it gets through both (50 votes).

Why bother to hack the voting machines when the media reports what they are paid to report. There is no such thing as a Free Press. They are paid well during Presidential Campaigns.

So they have already voted once to start the debate, 82-15, or is there another vote?

If that is the case, we have one more shot stopping this by voting no for cloture, correct?

I just returned from the county Registrar of Voters office. When I told them I wanted to change my registration they asked if it was a change of address or party affiliation. I told them ‘affiliation’ to which the person said a number of people had come in today to change affiliation, that it is unusual at this time of year to have any changes and to have so many affiliation changes and all on the same day was unusual. I made some remark about ‘current events’ which got a little bit of a smile.

This area is predominately Republican. Hope they hurt.

Make it happen. Make them hurt. Change your affiliation. Give them no money. Give them no quarter.

Cornyn. What a Judas!

Yep! I’ve been trying to call his D.C. office for two days and there isn’t a human to be found to answer the phone and the voice mailboxes are full. He is in hiding and so is his staff. What a coward he is. I’ll remember this.

I now understand after the NSA corruption and both sides calling him a traitor when he hasn’t even given anything anyway but to tell the world they are spying on us all that we have one party with slight disagreements.
It’s an old boys club from ivy league schools who are told that they are the ruling class and we are peasants and it is a case of the ruling class and the workers.

They only want us when election time and ignore us later

I actually did get through yesterday. They were pleasant and said they’d pass on my message.

I’m sure he really cares what we think. /s

Don’t know why I waste my time. Just still trying to do the right thing.

To my knowledge no one of stature is preparing to challenge Cornyn the March 4 primary. Even George P. Bush lacks opposition at this point for land commissioner. The elites run TX.

Rand Paul is another Libertarian who is selling out his country in pursuit of a misguided ideal. Individual liberty can only exist within a constitutional republic that, above all else, protects its citizens through defended borders. Paul’s open border madness invites anarchy.

Yes, there’s another chance. There are a bunch of pansies in the senate who think that they’re being ‘unreasonable’ by not ‘having a debate’, so the numbers will likely look a lot different in the vote to end debate. I don’t know if they have the 60 or not. Last I heard, they did not have the votes to end debate. We’ll have to see.

Thanks. I hope the Reps are playing rope-a-dope with them. It would be far better to kill this in the Senate and not have the House deal with it. I am still betting that it will clear the Senate. Hopefully, it will be by a narrow margin and not have the 70 votes predicted by Schumer. This bill is a disaster and can't be fixed.

Passing immigration reform would be throwing a life preserver to Obama and the Dems. It would also transform this country forever.
