I think maybe you have a slightly skewed idea of what these groups can and can not do. They can not support or oppose candidates directly; however, they can support or oppose issues ESPECIALLY contentious political issues.

WHY? That is what the leftists want. That is why the leftists still whine about the Supreme Court decision on Citizen's United. That is why the leftists attempted to and successfully silenced many conservative groups using the IRS and many other agencies.
Keeping alive the free marketplace of ideas is what this is all about. The left wants to censor the people.
