my essential point is that regardless of all appearances, neither the radical fundamentalist Wahabi-Sunni Muslims of Saudi Arabia and their philosohpical allies in the MB, nor the radical fundamentalist Shia Muslim theocrats in Iran are now or ever will be TRUE shared-values friends of ours

Syria is their proxy war

and we have no dog in that race

During the Yom Kippur war the SA-7 saw large scale service against high speed jet fighter bombers. The Arab states are said to have fired more than 4000 SA-7 rounds against Israeli Skyhawks and other such ground attack aircraft and scored 7 shot down.

7 out of 4000.

The SA-7 is a Soviet copy of the obsolete U.S. Redeye manpad (predecessor to Stinger).

U.S. helicopters in Vietnam were able to fool the SA-7’s into missing them by venting their turbine exhaust up into the rotor wash.

If you can’t hit a helicopter...

To be clear, the call for genocide - a war crime - was declared by a member of the American and NATO backed Free Syrian Army govt and not the al-Qaeda branch of the rebels.

Theis man who declared genocide represents the rebel side Senator John McCain wants to arm and use American air power to help.

It can be argued that every senator who voted for arming the so called Free Syrian Army is now culpable for aiding and abetting genocide.

In this case you are nuts. The Alawites are not considered moslem by most moslems ~ and in Syria the Alawite community are, by tradition, the protectors of the Christian community.

This cannot be overstated enough, this will kill christians in the middle east in the end equation...

Has it ever occurred to anyone that the State Dept and Brits maybe would want eastern Christians cleansed from the Middle East because they tend to be Orthodox Christians and thus identify with Russia in some way or have some sympathy with Russian Orthodox co-religionists?

Would the State Dept or London want a democratic Syria where 10% of the population is pro Russian if these Syrian Sunni rebels did indeed create a true democracy rather than a fake one like we have now in Muslim Brotherhood dominated Egypt (which is still an American ally)?

No, I think for the west - or those in the west backing this jihad in Syria - the elimination of Orthodox Christians from these important oil and gas pipeline nations is part of the equation for defeating or blocking Russian power in the region.

Although correct that they are more protective of the Christians it is also true that the Alawhites wiped out entire villages of enemy muslems. I suspect this is payback

Easy to do when jihadis use civilians as human shields in the name of Allah.

Watching Assad fight Al Qaeda in Syria is like watching the ant war when you shovel a mound of red ants on top of a fire ant bed. No matter who wins there are fewer ants left to bite you.

That is stupid thinking. Sunni Islam jihadists winning there would actually create more ants as more Sunni Muslims see jihad works and flock to it.

This notion that the Syrian war will weaken both our enemies is false. Sunni jihad is the real threat and always has been.

WOW!! After centuries of fighting in the ME, cut off the $$$ and everything will be OK. Who wouldda thunk? Using logic and reason to come to terms with these vermin is futile.

I don't know why you have a problem with that statement? Modern weapons are expensive. The AK47 is cheap but they don't sustain a modern army. Cut off Saudi money and American logistics and the Free Syrian Army collapses.

Like the Shia Iranians or not (and I do not) they at least give their Christian minorities legal and political and religious rights (limited as they may be) compared to the Saudis. The Iranians even grant their women more rights (the right to vote) than the Saudis. The Iranians even have a democratic process - which is limited and controlled - but that is more than the Saudis have.

Here is the painful part, the Iranians who started the revolution have been anti-American because of what they feel the USA did in propping up the Shah - but they really don't hate the west and don't call for world wide jihad (because they are a minority within Islam).

The next generation of Iranians are very pro American culture and pro west but the Iranians are also a nationalistic and patriotic people and if the USA backs a jihad against Shia in Syria this will make the Iranian youth who want to open up to America become anti-American.

And we don't know how Arab Shia Iraqis will respond to Syrian Sunnis killing off Syrian Shia.

For some stupid reason the USA backed a play in Syria that now is a lose / lose situation for the USA but because of inertia - we as a super power can't be seen to change our minds or have second thoughts - we have to keep going on with a policy that failed us jeust because if we stop it we look weak or makes senators and the president look foolish, etc.

The protection of Christians should be our dog in this race and should serve as the basis of our foreign policy.

Frankly, if you want to kill the most moslems it is best to send some serious weaponry to the Alawites.

On another post today it is being reported that Iran is sending troops to support Assad along with Hezbollah.

This is a Sunni Vs Shia war and I hope they both loose.

Too narrow a viewpoint. The Alawites are a special sort of Shia, and, as I noted, in Syria they traditionally protect the Christians.

You disable the Alawites you allow the Sunni to murder all the Christians.

Iranian involvement is a totally different story.

We do have interests ~ one such interest are the several Christian communities still there. You side with the Sunni you sign their death warrant.

In the end we may need to send both Obama and McCain to Syria to explain to the Christians why they believe they are a useless minority that should be murdered off.

This is why I keep saying we should support Assad.
We should apologize to the Russians and back them in their support of Assad. We should be willing to do anything to make sure the “rebels” their supporters, and their camp-followers are completely exterminated.

If this is not an active policy to make sure eastern potentially Russian allied Christians are beaten down and destroyed I bet they would not mind that being a side benefit of it in any case.

Cutting off the US/NATO funding to the Al Qaeda mercenaries currently attacking Syria and slaughtering Christians would end the war going on there right now. I don’t remember Assad or his dad slaughtering Christians, blowing up churches, and causing wide spread destruction in Syria before the US/NATO funded Al Qaeda mercenaries began landing there two years ago. Maybe I missed that.

I agree with you, as a Christian of middle eastern origin I can say from personal experience that Sunni muslims are the threat to Christianity in the region, not Shiites.

In any case we are confusing our enemies here, practically all terrorist attacks are perpetrated by Sunni muslims. Look at Iraq as an example, when Saddam was ruling over the majority Shiite country, the Sunnis were happy because they were in power, but the shiites did not suicide bomb christians and muslims and US soldiers daily. Forward to Gulf war II when Saddam was out of power, Iraq became a hotbed of Sunni jihadists who were all too content with suicide bombings and car bombs to kill and maim our soldiers, to completely destroy the Christians and even attack fellow muslims who were not as hardline as they were.

These takferiin Sunnis are the most dangerous, they even believe that if a muslim doesnt follow islam as they do then they are halal to kill. From that statement it is easy to insinuate what they would do to Christians or muslims from any other sect or any minority.

Sunnis have a goal to spread their version of islam globally, that is my enemy. I dont care about the shiites, they are not my enemy, they are concentrated in 3 or 4 countries and can be easily dealt with if they get out of hand.
The real enemy are the oil rich gulf states that are using their money to control us into doing what they want. They are financing these jihadists, who will move from country to country achieving their goals, of complete sunni dominance in the middle east and the muslim world. Theyre spreading through europe like a plague, increasing their numbers every year until it will get to a point where europe will burst.

The true enemy is not a country or a person. It is a faith and a belief system, a political system. That system is Sunni Islam. If people on here cannot even identify their real enemies, then we have no chance in hell that the country as a whole will able to.

I also hate the concept of “ yeah lets let them kill each other. Yay!” because the number one victim in all these countries are the Christians. Coptic, Orthodox, and soon to be Maronite Christians who’s families and churches have been there since the beginning of Christianity. Those are the real victims. I pray for the day that I see just 1% of the support to those Christians as we show to the Israelis.(Don’t misunderstand me, they need our support aswell!)

We should really be letting our representatives know, that we do not accept sending weapons to our enemies, to Al Qaeda terrorists, to people who will destroy christian communities in the middle east and who will eventually turn on Israel.

This quote has been overused to no end but still very apt. “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”
