You have things backwards.
Their lot can only be improved - inside Syria - by the “civil war” ending withOUT victory by the “rebels”. We only need to quit putting our own fuel on the fire for that to happen. We don’t need to aid Assad or anyone.
With the EU aiding the rebels we really do need to do two things ~ restart WWII so we can correct some attitudes, and restart WWI so we can give the whole place back to the only people to ever figure out how to run the Middle East ~ the Turks!

Oh yes - the regional Saddam Hussein, that’ll put the Arabs in their place again (NOT), keep Iran quiet (NOT), silence Al Queda (NOT), put down the Islamists (NOT - Turkey is becoming Islamist), and bring peace to the Middle East (NOT).

No, quite technically, the Turks are not capable of playing the role they did at the time of the Ottoman Empire. The region is not the same and everyone else in the region is not going to sit by and let themelves be divided from each other against the Turks; and we, and the rest of Turkey’s allies in NATO are neither going to encourage or sit still for it either.
As I said; this is 2013, not the 14th century.
A tautology is not an argument ~ I simply proposed changing our policy ~ and with suitable armaments supplied by NATO, they can do it ~
