Somewhere on this thread, don’t know where: Sean Hannity mentioned that the children had drowned in a school pool. Probably dropped there by the storm.

They probably knew from experience to go west-away from the tornado if they could.

You certainly can and should if you have no place to shelter and you are in the track of the tornado.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. The only time you can do what you even remotely attempt what you describe is when you get a 1+ hour warning, and even that is questionable. Running off on foot or in a vehicle when a tornado is in close proximity is stupid and will get you killed.

I understand the school had a swimming pool in the basement. I’m thinking it gets too hot to have PE outside.

Oops! I meant to ask about tornados. I’m not thinking very well today.

I would think they didn't hunker down, because they had no way of knowing they were coming until they were on top of them.

It’s all ocean bottom. http://digital.library.okstate.edu/encyclopedia/entries/L/LI004.html says it’s all over the state. Remember, when you dig down through the thin soils (and anything less than 35 feet of glacial till topped by 25 feet of topsoil is ‘thin’) there’s limestone all over the place. OK doesn’t have the glacial till, but it does have plenty of ancient lakebeds and even a salt flat or two ~ but underneath it’s limestone ~

Dear Father in Heaven,

Grant strength and hope to the people of Oklahoma who are going through this difficult time. I fervently pray that those who are unaccounted for are found safe and sound. Please ease the suffering of those who mourn and those who have physical injuries. Please grant healing in body and spirit.

Amen.

".....clocked winds at 318mph." Really? I doubt any anemometer could measure that high. Where, and by whom, was this clocked?

Moore Oklahoma, National Weather Service (I think), 1999, Moore Oklahoma EF5 tornado. Look it up... You are on the internet, right?

Truly tragic, the post-mortem should be quite interesting.

I heard a reporter on KFOR the NBC affiliate there say the kids drown in a pool of water. Not necessarily a swimming pool.

Agreed, getting caught in a vehicle or on foot out in the open is the worst place to be. There's a famous video of some people under a highway overpass in on the Kansas Turnpike in 1991 sheltering from an oncoming tornado. Unfortunately some people have taken this too far. In 1999 a woman left her home to take cover under an overpass, assuming she would be safer there, but the tornado pulled her from under the bridge and she was killed.

No basement possible

A basement is always possible, it just may be expensive to excavate the rock in order to build the basement. Our rock in New Hampshire is way harder than limestone, but we still manage to blast through it when necessary.

The expense of not having a basement just became apparent today in Oklahoma. Perhaps future designers of school buildings will consider spending the extra money on excavation.

Right, because this tornado didn't destroy any houses or kill anyone who was at home when it hit.

They need a concrete vault that all the kids can fit in. When banks get slammed by f5’s the vault is always in good shape.

Yeah, run like hell from an F4 tornado... while you’re at it, swim like crazy when you’re in a tsunami... or digg like he’ll when you’re under the avalanche. Great advice.

Basements don’t keep well in Oklahoma according to an earlier post. With the weather extremes they end up leaking. Alot of good a heavily leaking basement would do in such a situation, though it does seem that they could create something that was not above ground. (anything that comes to my mind makes me feel extremely claustrophobic)

OKies know their state and I am sure if the COULD build shelters they would, not going to second guess them and tell them how to do their business.
