Gun homicides have dropped steeply in the United States since their peak in 1993, a pair of reports released Tuesday showed, adding fuel to Congress' battle over whether to tighten restrictions on firearms.
A study released Tuesday by the government's Bureau of Justice Statistics found that gun-related homicides dropped from 18,253 in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011. That's a 39 percent reduction.
Another report by the private Pew Research Center found a similar decline by looking at the rate of gun homicides, which compares the number of killings to the size of the country's population. It found that the number of gun homicides per 100,000 people fell from 7 in 1993 to 3.6 in 2010, a drop of 49 percent.

Now THERE'S a real unbiased entity.
Reduction in homicides has nothing to do with the increase in CCW holders, huh?
Factor out all the drug and gang related shooting, bet the number really shrinks.

I see that the tactic of using simple statistical observations as support for whatever position the left is advancing — whether it makes sense to, or not — has broken out of the climate change sphere and found wider application.
These “progressives” live in a very special world that is light-years away from the real one.
Didn’t you see Freakonomics? It’s because of Roe v. Wade and aborting unwanted children! Pffffffffffft
“Factor out all the drug and gang related shooting, bet the number really shrinks.”
Excellent point.
How does a sharply reduced number of gun homicides help the left?
Other than pointing out the stupidity of blaming gun violence on violent movies and video games, which a lot of people on the right do.
>> How does a sharply reduced number of gun homicides help the left?
Yeah. How *does* it?
How does temperatures *dropping* bolster a global *warming* theory?
Yet they will try to use it! Whether it makes sense to, or not. Hide and watch.
That’s precisely my point.
CC has basically doubled in the sane time. Libs don’t like to talk about that correlation in their one sided debate.
The “Assault Weapons” ban went into effect in 1993-1994. And there are more gun laws now and less crime, ergo (to the simple mind) more laws = less crime.
Never mind that when the ban was ended, the crime continued to go down. Never mind that more gangsters are in jail today than in 1994.
>> Libs dont like to talk about that correlation
Libs don’t like to reason with facts, period. It’s all about their superior (and settled) consensus for us all, based on what they *feel*.
Reading this and thinking about the shady looking character going to door to door selling steaks today. Could care less about stats, do care about protecting my family and property...
IIRC, ‘assault’ rifles are used in less than 1% of murders.
Mystery meat??
Sssssshhhhhhhh....
The reason for the violent crime being down significantly from 20 years ago is because of what happened, almost exactly 20 years ago.
In that year, conservative Republicans became a SERIOUS political force at the grassroots (i.e., thanks to straight-ticket voting in 1994) and that meant a return to LAW and ORDER. In Texas, our crime rate was THROUGH THE ROOF, but Ann Richards, even though a Democrat, built a boatload of jails and we FINALLY started putting people away. Then crime plummeted. Similarly for New York City. But some places, Chicago and New Orleans come to mind, never got the word...so they keep springing felons and the felons keep killing and maiming.
Gun policy and gun ownership was incidental...didn’t help, but didn’t hurt. Where they REALLY MATTER is when the Dems get permanent control of government, and go back to emptying jails again - then you BETTER have a way to protect yourself. And that is just one Amnesty vote away.
