It was reported the other day on an inside page of the Pioneer Press, and without nearly enough fanfare, that more than six out of 10 women who give birth in their early 20s are unmarried. That is census data, from census demographers, from the very government that then becomes responsible for many, if not most, of those unmarried women and children.
If that isn't an astonishing statistic, it should be. Why, to any logical person's way of thinking, it explains everything in terms of government at all levels bloating out of control.
Supposing that even angels might fear to tread here, it being liberal dogma that I shouldn't be telling women what to do, or men, either, for that matter, I would submit that marriage would solve virtually every economic issue facing this country.
The census demographers said that single motherhood, on the increase since the 1940s, has accelerated mindblowingly. The birth rate for unmarried women in 2007 was up 80 percent in the almost three decades since 1980. Just between 2002 and 2007, it was up 20 percent.

Fact is that the woman had choice. She chose to have sex with an uncommitted man. She chose to do so without being married. SHE IS NOT A VICTIM. The victim is the CHILD.
She should be called “unmarried parent” or something like that and needs be held responsible for her choices. Same for the father.
Indeed. And with the concept of homosexual marriage, the whole meaning of the institution goes away. Man-Man? Woman-Woman? 3-on-1? What difference does it make? Pregnancy happens, and the government will take care of the fallout! The important thing is, "we had fun".

I'll give single mom's a lot of credit for one thing. They aren't killing their babies. Sadly, that's a lot to ask these days. Some people here want to push shame tactics, but that will lead to more abortions as shame and embarrassment (esp in cases of affairs), family pressure, bad boyfriends, and inconvenience are often reasons for abortions.
Sometimes it's not the single mom's fault. Widows. Guys leaving town and disappearing. That happens. I've seen both happen.
Single parenting is not ideal, but it's a lot more ideal than abortion.
They can raise children on their own as long as they can suck us all dry.
THe best way to guarantee a future of poverty and crime for a child is to have him be brought up by a single mom.
People see this as a criticism of single mothers. NO - its a criticism of society that allows, encourages and supports this, as well as of MEN - who are avoiding their responsibilities
There are NO “single” moms. Just unmarried ones, and 99% of the time by choice. Can’t let that “marriage” thing interfere with EITC, welfare, section 8, food stamps, obamaphones, etc, etc,etc.
That's my experience as well here in Chicago a few blocks from the West Side, only it's a Chrysler 300. I also have a brother-in-law living in a house he inherited with his girlfriend plus two kids from previous dude. She works just enough hours to get the child care check. Everyone's getting their own government support. Who needs work?
There are “fathers” and there are “sperm donors”...perhaps a more accurate description is that welfare replaced fathers with sperm donors.

The comment: these subsidized single mothers must be the finest flowering of the Cloward Piven strategy. It’s untouchable. It’s for the children.
Now the question: why don’t we audit these poor single mums? In the UK they decided to audit the rolls of the disability claimants and a HUGE percentage voluntarily withdrew just because of the announcement..

The problem actually seems to be one of single dads more than single moms, since single moms are at least overwhelmingly fully vested in raising their children.
It’s the dads who aren’t shouldering their share of the load.
