US Visa Reforms To Help Skilled IT Professionals Ishani Duttagupta Apr 22, 2013

Reggie Aggarwal is the founder and CEO of Cvent, an online event management company co-located out of Washington, DC and Gurgaon. With about 60 of the top engineering positions in his US operations lying vacant, Aggarwal has a problem.

"We need guys with deep engineering knowledge and every tech employer, from Fortune 500 companies to small start-ups in the US, knows that there's a huge shortage of such people in America," says the Cvent founder. "Like all other tech CEOs, I know there is a huge talent pool of such engineers in India," adds Aggarwal whose operations in Gurgaon employ around 650 such people. Even in the US, Indians form the largest part of Cvent's 550-strong workforce.

IT is straightforward work for the many US citizens looking for a job. There is no special Indian advantage.

What has caused this shortage?

Most Indians i know are nice people, especially the Hindus and the Sikhs.

I would be happy if the H1B would only import Hindus and Sikhs.

The issue is they may have a “degree” but school in India is very much a “Route Memorization” Workshop, many i know lack critical logical deductive reasoning and thinking.

We simply can’t assimilate wave upon wave of foreign cultures that are un-assimilatable with western mores.

“What has caused this shortage?”

The “I’m going to get rich the easy way syndrome”, encouraged by the Rich, Cool Lawyer TV shows, garage bands, NBA/NFL/MLB dreams, easy welfare, PC high school curriculum, and implemented by lazy kids.

When was the last time you saw a TV show with a cool engineer for the hero?

I stayed with a family in India for 6 weeks during the time their son was studying for his high school finals. Most US high school students would be sent back to the 8th grade if enrolled in an Indian school.

Did you mean to say “rote memorization”?

“that are un-assimilatable with western mores.”

The word you might be looking for is “unassimilable” but then what do I know. I come from country where they taught me everything by “route memorization” ......and I am not very “assimilatable”. ;)

Indians don’t generally work on IEDs. That would be the White Caucasian Muslims from Chechnya.

Searched for those 60 engineering positions on cvents website. Counting internships I found 19 jobs with engineer in the title (qa performance etc). Total of 31 jobs when I searched on “engineer”

Oh, horse chit. In America, there are plenty of fifty and sixty year olds - even forty year olds - who could fill those positions and bring the requisite knowledge. But nothing beats a “back up the school bus” approach with foreign nationals willing to work dirt-cheap and who are beholden to the company bringing them over lest they look for another job and get shipped right back home. Call the H1B’s indentured servants and you wouldn’t be that far off.

How come those positions cannot be filled by “Americans”? It’s not like we don’t have millions without a job, drawing unemployment checks (not to mention the millions of others who have given up looking).

Is it because they are not qualified?

is it because many spend fortunes getting an education that qualifies them to do nothing?

Please explain this to me...

For those who don’t engage in rote memorization, a distinction is made between assimilable as where liquids mix and assimilatable in dealing with cultural adaptations. Check issues of Comparative Culture Review, a scholarly publication where the term “assimilatable” appears with some frequency.

1. Set up an “engineering school” in India. Cirriculum to include training in industry-specific disciplines ABC, DEF.4, MumboJumbo Version 3.5, XYZbuilder, etc.

2. Advertise a job requiring a bewildering array of required disciplines — see above for list.

3. Satisfy government regulations that no Americans qualify. (Legal help is available to ensure this.)

4. Hire Indians from “engineering school”.
