This morning I watched yet another video of something that disturbs me greatly: the events leading up to the legal theft of several tons of cheese produced on a small family farm in Missouri. This, after the cheese had been embargoed for over 2 years and thus was no longer fit for consumption anyway. All of this was done in the name and at the expense of the taxpayers of Missouri, under the guise of food safety.

Nanny State PING!
What a travesty!!
Our food system is set up and run by people hell bent on pure profit and health is the secondary motive. We are not allowed to eat raw food but food processed till there is no nutritional value left is perfectly fine. Then we wonder why the majority of people are 30+ lbs overweight.
Nanny State PING!
Your post shows an incorrect view of Conservative principles, and it has NOTHING to do with the video at the link.
What you seem to miss and what is happening all across the nation is that sadistic Statists at all levels of government are out to abuse the citizens and small businesses (and large businesses that go against the Marxist).
Yes, some big businesses use the power of government to punish competitors and such. That is not a failure of government, but an abuse of power by those in government. It's what Sarah and others called Crony capitalism.
It's disgusting how government at all levels is abusing our freedoms.
Should be,
That is not a failure of capitalism..
If there was any proof to such fantastic claims, it would be wonderful to see. Some anecdotes about how some (proportion unmeasured) people did better on the raw product (which they ought to be free to consume, don’t mistake me) is the best that ever gets produced. Some claim that pasteurization removes minerals, something chemically impossible. When pasteurization first came into practice, there was soon a large demand for it; not only did the milk keep longer, there WERE fewer milk-borne diseases. Today, a farm must be very scrupulous about sanitation if it is to produce publicly acceptable raw dairy products.
Thanks for the ping!
There needs to be a day that we just say no to government - with consequences for anyone enforcing government's will.
This is one area where Europeans have more freedom than we do.
It looks like a dispute over the sanitation status of the product, about whether Listeria was present or not. Tests on the cheese alleged it was present; tests on the dairy itself found none.
Some smart food processing operations (though I don’t know if raw organic dairies would be interested) have started to use phages — viruses which do nothing but kill bacteria. The viruses are harmless to humans. Any unlucky Listeria bacterium that gets accosted by a phage is soon croaked. But it may sound too “processed” for use. Whatever. But this looked like a genuine dispute of facts.
Let me use an unrelated and unregulated example of personal responsibility. Last Saturday, a friend called me up we got to talking about his plans for the afternoon. He was dressing and cleaning two ducks that his neighbor gave him. He never did that before so I offered to help him. When I arrived at his house, I found his wife a little suspect of the ducks, since they were not dressed and they have been hanging for several days. It has been very cold here, so probably no problems and I said if there is any problem with the ducks I would tell them. The ducks were plucked, cleaned and roasted. No one got sick. The government wasn't involved, and personal judgement (responsibility) made sure that no one got sick.
Granted, most people do know how to do that, but they should. Last summer, I bought some hamburger and went to a couple of other stores. When I went to make the burgers for dinner it didn't look or more importantly smell right. I threw it out. While it may be stretch, but shouldn't government monitor me driving around on a hot summer day with hamburger in my vehicle so I don't get sick?
I stumbled across a documentary on hulu called ‘Farmageddon.” It’s worth watching.
Pasteurization kills the naturally-occuring lactic acid producing bacteria in raw milk. In raw milk, this lactobacteria cultures and acidifies milk making it inhospitible to the more nefarious biological agents that make store-bought milk "go bad". The result is that raw milk actually has a longer shelf life than the pasteurized homogenized milk that has been made available to the public since the decline of the small family farm.
I have consumed raw milk that had been in sealed glass bottles kept at 41° F in my fridge and the "expiration" date was 3 months back... on the top of the bottle where the cream is was excellent naturally-produced sour cream, the rest was fully cultured skim milk. It's an aquired taste, but very similar to buttermilk or a thin kefir.
To describe the taste (in mixed, polite company) is difficult. Let's just say that lactobacteria cultures occur elsewhere in nature where ist also provides an environment naturally hostile towards infectious diseases.
it's all just a dream, right?
My grandparents gave my dad and aunt soured raw milk when they weren’t feeling well. I’d personally love to get ahold of some for my kids. Dairy sends my son into uncontrolable ADHD meltdowns, that no spankings, timeouts, iPod deprivations, nor serious talkings to can cure. I’d love to see if he has the same issues with raw.
Food safety laws benefit the middle man, not the producer. They are for transport rather than consumption purposes.
Everybody on that farm should have been armed. A show of strength to tell those commie bastards a line has been drawn.
Either we mean business when it comes to this stuff or we can lie down and let them take everything. It is THAT simple.
She was close- this is something new.
Obammunism: Crony Socialism.
All the worst of crony capitalism combined with all the worst of socialism.
Or, the worst form of government there is, designed to ruin a perfectly good country in mere years.
Normal Socialism takes decades to become a miserable failure. This is going to do it in record time, probably as soon as everyone is disarmed.
