I have no doubt whatsoever that this was a set up. They let this guy just walk away and no cops got him?

I bet that newspaper is behind this.

According to NBC’s Channel 4 New York:

“Schools in Mamaroneck, N.Y. are locked down after a man with a gun showed up at a middle school and tried to get in, officials said.

The man left without incident, officials said.

He tried to access Hommocks Middle School through a side entrance that was locked, and then went to the main entrance, where he was stopped.

A campus worker asked him why he was there and noticed he had a gun, according to an email sent to parents. The man said he had the gun because he works as a security guard.

He said he wanted to retrieve an item of clothing he left in the pool area over the weekend, according to Mamaroneck Police.

Lt. Robert Koziak said the man was described as “pleasant.”

He was not allowed in, and left.

Parents were notified that schools were secured, and that afternoon and evening activities had been canceled.”

That’s in Westchester county - one of the counties on the map published by the journal.

They have a pool at their school?

This story is weird all the way around. Glad the man was “pleasant”.

Obama must have had a tizzy and told his minions, "I'm not hearing enough kids hitting the ground! I want GUN CONTROL! Pop me some more kids!"

Would you really be surprised if you found out later that's what happened?

Surely he must have broken a “gun-free zone” law, and they let him walk away? Hmmm.

You and I try this and we’re in BIG doo doo.

Nope, I've been saying it since the day it happened. I would not be surprised to find out HUSSEIN was behind the school shooting AND the movie theater shooting.

After "Fast and Furious", I would be surprised if he wasn't.

High schools let middle aged men swim in their
pools?

I am not sure of the laws in every state, but private security guards are often private police officers and are allowed to carry firearms even in areas where they are deemed as ‘gun free’. They act as police officers with the power to detain and patrol.

If he was a private police officer, and he was pleasant and had his gun holstered and visible, what the heck is the problem?

It was a middle school - double why do they have a pool?

Maybe the man WAS security - LOL - don’t know their own.

Maybe because he tried first at a side door? A bit odd. There is also no evidence he is a PO or some such.

I agree it could be all innocuous, and the man was “nice”, but it’s still a weird story.

Pretty common to have a pool at the high school around here—middle school less so.

I was rather surprised to learn that some schools, especially high schools, in poorer neighborhoods, frequently have a problem with adults coming on to school grounds for all sorts of bad reasons.

In one such school, they had to post an armed security guard in the gym, because adults would show up, take the basketball away from the kids, and start playing basketball.

The security guard was initially surprised because their attitude was, “Should I have not done that?”, not grasping the difference between a school and a public park with a basketball court. But he soon soured of the stupidity, and was clear that if they didn’t leave, right now, he was half inclined to shoot them.

Even then, much of the time, the jerks would try to take the school’s basketball with them, claiming it was their own, despite the large print on it identifying it as the property of the school. When they surrendered the ball, it would be with a string of curses.

His team of armed guards at the school were busy all day, only a fraction of the time with students.

OK I know you meant "mental health" but I had a LOL image of an exam: "OK, who's better, Black Death, or Mötley Crüe?"

The school complex has a pool and a skating rink that is shared with the community and surrounding areas. Admission to rink is discounted to Town residents, and is used by many from surrounding areas. Very nice friendly community center feel to it. I have also seen this type of arrangement in towns in other states, Massachusetts, Illinois, and California.

Is swimming a big winter sport in New York? I'm from California, so I'm not too familiar with how folks Back East entertain themselves this time of year.

Where I grew up the cluster of three schools (elementary, middle, and high) had the pool at the middle school. It was open to the public evenings and weekends during the school year. Plenty of lakes to swim in during the summer - but used for ice fishing in the winter!

I grew up and went to school in Townville, PA in the 70's.

We had a rifle range down in the basement of the school.

During hunting season we took our guns to school and put them in our lockers and after school on the ride home on the bus I would have the driver drop me off about a mile from home and would hunt my way back to my parents place!

Hell I remember my mom giving my older brother $35.00 to buy a 30-06 from one of his friends at school and carrying it home on the bus!

I sure miss those days!
