I am not sure of the laws in every state, but private security guards are often private police officers and are allowed to carry firearms even in areas where they are deemed as ‘gun free’. They act as police officers with the power to detain and patrol.

If he was a private police officer, and he was pleasant and had his gun holstered and visible, what the heck is the problem?

Maybe because he tried first at a side door? A bit odd. There is also no evidence he is a PO or some such.

I agree it could be all innocuous, and the man was “nice”, but it’s still a weird story.
