Actor Larry Hagman, notorious and beloved as 'Dallas' villain J.R. Ewing, dies

Larry Hagman, the North Texas native who played the conniving and mischievous J.R. Ewing on the TV show Dallas, died Friday at a Dallas hospital. He was 81.

Mr. Hagman died at 4:20 p.m. Friday at Medical City Dallas Hospital from complications of his recent battle with cancer, members of his family said.

I saw him recently in the new Dallas series, he didn't seem well but he put an effort into trying to make it on the show.

Mrs. 40 has every season of Dallas on DVD and she insisted we visit Southfork when we visited Dallas a couple of years ago.

How sad. His character is a part of Americana. I fondly remember the big deal Dallas was in its day (loved the early to middle years), but it always seemed to me that Larry Hagman didn't let that fame swell his head. J.R. was one of those bad guys we loved to hate.

Havent seen that show in years, back when it used to be on every day. I haven’t seen Hagman look like that, either. Funny, maybe it’s the hair, but the pic reminds me of the guy playing Booth on “Bones” (and was Angel before that) even though I know they don’t look alike.

Wow. J.R. Ewing is gone --- I can remember when I was forbidden to watch Dallas, but my sister and I would somehow sneak to the TV and see enough to follow along on the plot, week to week.

And of course, after school, we saw the Jeannie reruns... not sure if we ever really connected that good guy Maj. Nelson was the evil J.R.!

Hagman was the epitome of hypocrisy. A pot toking alcoholic ex-cigarette smoker who died of throat cancer after receiving a liver transplant while admonishing against smoking.

I don't think he was particularly conservative, but he remained married to the same woman since 1954, which by Hollywood standards, is probably a record.

He was a pot enthusiast and blew out 2 livers drinking. He lost his gig as a liver transplant spokesman trying to raise awareness to the shortages of transplants after blowing out a transplant very quickly.. 16,000 folks die each year waiting for a liver. He destroyed his first transplanted liver within several years and bought a second.

Only a few, Mickey Mantle and John Phillips come to mind, have the resources and clout to buy-pass the transplant waiting list like Larry.

Rest in peace, but he doesn’t deserve much respect for his personal life.

Interesting bit of trivia, his mother was Mary Martin, of Peter Pan fame. I always enjoyed his programs. Rest in Peace, Mr Hagman, and thanks for the entertainment.

My wife and I happened to watch the first episode of Dallas. My wife really liked it and I didn’t mind watching it.

One thing they missed on continuity was Juicy, oops I mean Lucy was originally cast as the a different person than she later was.

I always thought his comedic skills (in “Jeannie”) were top-notch, and he was actually rather underrated.

As a human being, well... I read a long, long interview of him (where he went on endlessly about his dope/alcohol use, and his pursuits of ‘opening his mind’), and he came across as one of the most ridiculously self-absorbed personalities that I could imagine. Very juvenile and stunted mind, incapable of seeing anything beyond himself. Downright cringe-worthy, reading that interview.

I found out he was from Weatherford, Tx when I lived in Fort Worth for a few years in the 80s. His mother was Mary Martin who played Peter Pan in the TV version (1960). There’s a statue of her as Peter Pan in downtown Weatherford. Hagman also played an interpreter to President (Fonda) in the movie Fail-Safe (1964).
