“Why do we put the History of New England, that most Blue of Blue regions, forward as the official History or the USA?”

Because they won the second civil war and the most recent victor writes the history books. I like Thanksgiving as one of the few good things to come out of New England, along with clam chowder and whaling songs.

Years ago when Mrs. Chandler was sick the task of cooking Thanksgiving dinner for our extended family fell upon my sturdy shoulders. In spite of never before having cooked a turkey, I did so that day and the result was excellent. Here is my method:

  1. Buy a turkey with a popup.
  2. Buy an oven bag.
  3. Put the turkey in the oven bag.
  4. Roast the turkey according to the instructions which come with the oven bag.
  5. Remove the turkey when the popup pops up.

I recently saw a grocery store (I think it was Publix) advertising a fully prepared Thanksgiving dinner. Check the grocery stores in your area and see if they have anything like this.

Boston Market offers that too. Not cheap, but easy.

That's a bunch of fantastic ideas. I will check with the local Price Choppers and Shaw's grocery stores to see if they are doing any prepared stuff, if not, try the "speed thaw" method for the turkey and just do stovetop-type stuffing and some canned vegetables.

I love you guys, thanks everybody!

I heard a report on the radio of a fatal car crash that occurred very early this morning. The first and last names of the victim are the same as a life-long friend of mine who lives in the same county that the crash occured and his is not a common name at all. However, I later learned that the person killed was not my friend. The victim is two years younger than my friend and was also a resident of the same county. I had an hour of dread, panic and worry before it verifiable. Needless to say, I can breathe easier now but for the misfortune of the man who died and I’m feeling just a little bit thankful this afternoon.

For those who freak out over holiday dinners, it’s all about simple timing rather than frantic time consuming:

Thaw turkey about 3 days in fridge.

Bake the pies and a pan of cornbread (for the stuffing) the day before. Leave the cornbread uncovered on the counter to dry out overnight.

Get up at the reasonable hour of 7 am. Put the eggs on to boil. Enough for deviled eggs and 4-6 more for the giblet gravy and dressing. Wash the bird, cover with foil and put him into the oven (fyi - if you value a moist breast over presentation, bake him breast side down). Put the neck and giblets into a covered pot with water and place it on the back burner that it over the oven vent so that it’ll cook without any electricity. By then, the eggs should be boiled so turn off the eggs’ burner.

Go sit down with a cup of coffee and relax with the family.

About an hour before the turkey is done (about the 3.5 hour mark for a large bird at 350 degrees), pour off most of the turkey juice to use for the gravy and the dressing. Leave the foil off and return the turkey to the oven to finish cooking and browning the skin. During that hour, put together the side dishes.

When the bird comes out of the oven, put in the side dishes so they bake while he’s resting. Cover him back up with the foil to keep warm and moist.

Go sit down with the family until the sides are done.

Many churches have pot lucks for members, and others. They should be especially happy that your son’s life is hopefully changing for the better.

I hope he has a long and fruitful life. But, just remember, some of us are not here for very long and go to be with Him.

No matter what, keep the faith, have a wonderful THANKSgiving and a beautiful CHRISTmas.

Yes, a turkey can be made in the microwave. One year I brought the thawed turkey out to the old farm place but didn’t realize the oven wasn’t working properly. Thankfully, the micowave was large enough for the bird. I covered his ankles and nuked him checking on him and turning every so often. Since there was nowhere for the steam to escape, he turned out very moist and not one bit dried out. The family talked for years about how good that turkey was.

Ready made mashed potatoes in the refrigerator case. Bob Evans is a good brand. Warm in the microwave.

If there is a Marie Callendar’s near you, they have a pretty good turkey feast on Thanksgiving. I took my mom 2 or 3 times while she was in assisted living.
Plus the pies are awesome!

No time to buy stuff? Heck, I’ll be headed to the store this afternoon so there’s still time. If you get the bird today, there’s still enough time for him to thaw enough in the fridge. By the time you wash him off Thursday morning and get out the innards, he’ll thawed enough for the oven. Go for it!

Most restaurants could do a take out. Many grocery store deli do the whole meal. The only problem is too often they make powdered potatoes and nasty gravy. If you can swing it at home, it’d be tastier.

All the best to young FRiend there.

The best cook in the family is doing Thanksgiving this year, so looking forward to it! She is a master of turkey, she says her trick is to use a digital thermometer and pull it out of the oven when it is 10 degrees less than the recommended temperature then let it sit and finish cooking on its own.

Christmas buying is much less stressful this year as well, all the liberal family members are just getting a case of Rush Limbaugh’s tea. My way of going Galt and only purchasing from conservatives wherever possible. I’ll put much more thought and effort into gifts for my few right minded family members.

We started a new tradition of going out for Thanksgiving dinner a few years ago after years of all work and no play for us “womenfolk”. It has been great. - We have sometimes gone over to the State Park near us which serves a grand buffet at lunch and dinner on Thanksgiving. We go over at night for the uncrowded dinner buffet. - Too crowded at lunch time. - Also, Shoney’s isn’t horrible on Thanksgiving if you go early. - Our local mom & pop restaurant also serves Thanksgiving lunch, and it’s okay.
