Was General Petraeus told by the Obama administration to fall on his sword? Was the general told he would be exposed unless he clammed up about Benghazi? Did he decide to blow his own cover before the president could? Could it be he is sitting on stuff that would tempt some in ccongress to consider the president's impeachment -- and Obama knows it?
There are so many unanswered questions.

For the past 40+ years the media has not been about facts and truth. The MSM has been about finding different ways to suppress reality. To create agenda's. One way for people to communicate with each other through email without actually sending an email is to share the same email account, log in and leave their messages in a mail folder. This lowers the chance of any email being intercepted if someone had the account flagged. It could very well have been that Petraeus gave her his username and password and that she didn’t hack into the account at all. They were able to communicate with each other by email by logging in and leaving a message without actually sending the message.
My guess is that Bronco Bamma has had the FBI ( Eric the Holder runs that) digging dirt on anyone in the Regime that could expose him for years.
When it looked like the General might testify they sprung the affair on him so he would have to resign.
Now if it looks like he still might testify we will read about how he committed suicide due to his shame over the affair.
I’m thinking your scenario is a strong possibility. Now that Petraeus “manned up†and came clean he now has nothing to lose by spilling the beans about Benghazi. The truth really does set you free.
History will be judging America much like look in wonder at how and why the Nazi party took hold in Germany and were “allowed” to get away with the Night of the Long Knives.
The woman in question is very believable as the partner in an affair. Maybe I am reading too much into this, but I feel it is as possible that this is a ruse, if the affair happened or not.
Well, as much as I want him to testify to the TRUTH, I also do not have pity. He made a deal with Satan by working for Obama. Let him live with the consequences.
I believe he resigned so he could TELL THE TRUTH. Remember, a few days back (before the election) he said it was NOT the CIA who gave the Stand Down order.

The administrations line all along is that they aren't funneling illegal arms to the "resistance" in Syria, but CIA had a covert gunrunning op in first Libya and now in Syria that there are going to be some ugly questions about. That's what Stevens as doing over there in the first place.
The "consulate" is nothing of the kind. If you notice, it's variously called a consulate, a mission, a diplomatic mission.
What it really was is a storehouse for all their ill gotten weapons that we've been funneling to Al Queda and it's various arms to fight the "arab spring" with.

After realizing he was found out, and then found out Broadwell was hacking into his emails (a betrayal itself), and realizing he could take the fall for Benghazi (betrayal by 0bama), he is opting out of the mess - only to testify with the whole truth about Benghazi to try to redeem himself for his betrayal (of his wife).

This whole administration stinks. They knew everything this guy did before he was ask to take charge of the CIA. They have info (secrets) on everyone they are envolved with including the senators, congressmen and Supreme court judges.
They were worried about someone blackmailing him because of his affair. Exactly, what are they doing right now.
Another FReeper said that Petraeus had been blackmailed into silence, or was expecting to be, and so came clean on the affair and resigned so that he could testify with impunity.
IOW, he won’t be alive much longer.
