The NYPD is investigating an incident involving the roughing up and handcuffing of a 15-year-old girl for using a student MetroCard officers believed was not hers. (Spoiler: They were wrong.) On July 26, summer-schooler Alexis Sumpter was waiting for the A train at 125th Street when two plainclothes officers who had apparently seen a turnstile light indicating a student card had been swiped approached her and demanded to know her age.
When Sumpter could not produce an ID, the cops called her a liar and summoned a third officer, who "[pressed] her face against the wall while the two others cuffed her" while saying they "didn't owe an explanation" for the harsh treatment. They then called Sumpter's father, who vouched for her age, but the girl was only uncuffed and released when her mother brought a copy of her birth certificate to the station. There, officers finally explained their reasoning, which was that her daughter "looked like an adult." Take note, teens: There are some disadvantages to looking older than your age especially when you live in a city with a very, very aggressive police force.
Obviously TSA rejects hired by the PD.
Very good thing she didn’t have her dog with her.
Ve must have your papers!
Just imagine what they would have done if she was holding a big gulp soda.
Pork products.
You need ID to prove who you are to get on the subway or 3 cops are on your case but illegals have freedom of movement at all times.
On July 26, African American John Smith was waiting in line to vote at the 21st Precinct when two plainclothes officers approached him and demanded to know his voter registration information. When Smith could not produce an ID, the cops called him a liar and summoned a third officer, who "[pressed] his face against the wall while the two others cuffed him" while saying they "didn't owe an explanation" for the harsh treatment. They then called Smith's father, who vouched for his identity, but the man was only uncuffed and released when his father brought a copy of his birth certificate to the station. There, officers finally explained their reasoning, which was that his son "looked like a minority Democrat voter."

Alexis Sumpter

You do realize this is her side of the story and only her side. Of course, it’s possible everything she said was true. Or, more likely, there’s more to the story.
Imagine if she was a memember of some group like Islam or LGBT or black or an illegal?
Thank GOD I live in the country, and my 14 yr old daughter is a crack shot(thank you 4-H).

Video here of her describing her encounter with the police thugs (she even looks like a student): http://landing.newsinc.com/shared/video.html?freewheel=69016&sitesection=nydailynews&VID=23760703
“...brought a copy of her birth certificate to the station.”
Hmmm - now how to we lure Barry to take the subway?
She must have been drinking a Big Gulp to receive that harsh of treatment. Lucky she wasn’t also eating popcorn.
When they say swiped, they don’t mean reported stolen either.
Keep in mind that this is the same gummit that says if you look to be less than 40 years old, you got to show ID to buy booze or tobacco.
If they are so worried about misuse of these cards by non students, how about putting a picture of the user upon them. The technology to do this costs mere pennies today. And in the meantime if she told them who she was, why can’t they call up her state ID/driver’s license picture or sumfin based on how she identified herself, and look at it.
Remember the poor guy who was pulling his wallet out of his pocket at their command and they shot him 41 times (See: Amadou Bailo Diallo)
Nah, this seems highly likely as told. She looked older. It’s more common than you think. This is why they say at many places that sell alcohol or smokes, you got to show ID if you don’t look to be older than 40. And she might not have had other ID with her, not being intent on anything that needed it, and maybe she even smarted off to the cop a bit about her alleged American rights... but there’s very likely no cause to have pushed her face into a wall.
That is SO friggin rich.
Sorry, don't buy it. She looks very much 15-16 years old.
Joseph K revisted.
She said she’d been mugged; however she still had the card for some reason. Either the mugger took pity on her and let her keep it to return home, or she had it in another pocket. Still you’d think they’d offer to help get her to the police station and report the mugging (and certainly skip the handcuff treatment) unless the NYC blue is truly so jaded as to not care about this.
“Alexis Sumpter”
Hmmmm. Let me think on this, let me strain my brain.
She looks like....a HS student....she could be, let me think....anywhere r4om 14 to 22 years old.
I cannot, CANNOT believe the NYPD gave this gal a hard time.
I grew up in NYC, greatest cops in the world.
What the H.E.L.L. has happened?
F***in’ thugs in badges.
She’s got a more mature style with the relatively conservative hair and glasses. Still this could be anything from late teens upward.
She’s likely hearing from a gaggle of hopeful lawyers now.
You must produce a driver’s license to prove that you are too young to get a driver’s license? Sounds like something Bloomberg’s stormtroopers would come up with.
Handcuffs can be very fashionable. /not
Even if you are old enough to drive in NY, you could still be a student; perhaps these passes are even good for university students.
I have nephews who have experienced this same bullsh**. Luckily, their father was right there to explain to the thugs that they are students (in HS) and don’t have adult level ID. So don’t give me this bullp**p about the cop’s side. I ain’t hearing it.
It’s got her picture and a date on it, looks like. Seems simple enough for the card to be programmed with an expiration date when she would no longer be old enough.
And this “non arrest” custody with handcuffs sounds hokey. If you are not free to go you are arrested.
old enough => young enough
Wow! Excellent point. She was mugged of everything except the tranit card. I can see the mugger now: “Ok, I’ll take your school id which is worthless, but you keep the transit card- which is worth money.” What reallhy happened? Cops: “Young lady, we’re from the NYPD and we need to see some ID” Girl: “F you mofos, you’re disrepectin me and I don’t have to show you sh!t.”
Seems like all public officials demand and expect you to produce an ID for everything you do unless you are getting ready to vote. Then all you need is your name.
If some adult had got caught boinking her you can bet these same cops would swear under oath and on the witness stand that she looked 12.
Would you care to re-phrase that?
Then all you need is your a name.
Not guilty...at least that will be my verdict when she becomes an adult. What the heck were the cops thinking?
.... but God forbid you need one to vote.
Haha, well done.
And so if she did; the occifers should have counted that par for the course and not cared. The card’s worth money? Not if tied to a user. The cops could not say they cared about this and also claim they did not care about that.
Uh, that pic is from a movie.
I bow to your cinematic expertise.
Still, if this is a worry, why not put the user’s picture on them.
Why?
thank you... There are some things money can't buy, for everything else there's MultiPass.
You are so right. I stand corrected.
A group of us went through voter registration training for Texas residents last week and then a judge appointed by Obama got involved and ruled against our current procedures. He thinks anyone anywhere should be able to register people to vote in Texas, not just Texas residents who are trained. Not sure if Abbott is going to appeal or not. Pretty touchy issue right now with some of us.
Because the young lady in question is black, maybe?
Just imagine what they would have done if she was holding a big gulp soda.Meanwhile the real criminals like this guy are running amok.
