Pro, con arguments on proposed NY sugary drink ban
Yahoo News ^ | July 24, 2012 | Samantha Gross

Posted on 07/25/2012 8:54:09 PM PDT by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

NEW YORK (AP) — Medical professionals who favor a proposed ban on large-sized sugary drinks likened soda companies to Big Tobacco at a public hearing Tuesday, saying the plan would protect the public, while opponents accused the city of playing Big Brother and wondered what tasty but unhealthy foods might be targeted next.

New York City's health board heard hours of testimony on a proposed rule that would limit soft-drink cup and bottle sizes at food service establishments to no larger than 16 ounces.

Medical experts spared no rhetoric in hailing Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposal as a way to protect the public from a soft-drink industry they said pushes carbonated calories on children and employs the same well-financed lobbying tactics as Big Tobacco.

One doctor said before the hearing that the calorie-packed beverages increase the risk of diabetes, and are responsible for a big share of the "massive suffering and premature death" linked to obesity.

"Soda in large amounts is metabolically toxic," said Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health. "It's obvious that this is the right thing to do."

A 20-ounce bottle of Coca-Cola has roughly the same calorie count as a McDonald's hamburger, but Kelly Brownell, a psychology, epidemiology and public health professor at Yale University, said it is easier to over-drink than over-eat.

"You don't feel as full when you consume calories in liquids," he said. "These beverages are the single greatest source of added sugar in the American diet."

Critics ridiculed the idea that city officials should regulate portion sizes.

City Councilman Daniel Halloran III called the proposal a "feel-good placebo" that would hurt profit margins at small businesses while failing to improve anyone's health.

Oh BTW, nanny lovers need to remember that when you go after one group eventually it will come around to you....First it was smokers....now it is soda drinkers and tonight I heard on Fox News that Bloomy is going after alcoholic beverages.....who is next after that? I don’t think anybody is safe. Safe to see America going down this road.

Why not just raise taxes on all food and reduce the consumption to make people skinny? We could go back to food rationing like WWII. It works in Europe..food is so expensive that people are skinny,,plus they must walk more because the poor don’t have cars. Then increase the cost of energy so that people are colder in winter and burn more calories..like Europe.
If all that doesn’t work..eliminate food stamps because the poor are the ones who tend to be fatter anyway. Eliminate free school lunch..because the kids who get them are fat. I could go on.

Part of the American ideal is the right to be left alone, and to have commerce with like-minded individuals and businesses in an environment of non-interference by the state.

These idiotic, arbitrarily authoritarian social engineers are un-American at their core, and they don't even realize it. However well-meaning they may be, they have become blinded by their own arrogance and conceit.

This nanny-state mentality must be rebuked wherever and whenever it appears, and its enablers repudiated as the anti-patriotic petty Tyrants that they are...

We’re fixing to get a dose of that.
Soured corn for hunting deer has gone from $4 a sack to $10 a sack in just a few months.

That’s the stuff we toss on the ground for critters.

Beef is down at the moment because ranchers are selling off their herds as they cant afford to feed them

“They will outlaw chocolate fudge everything.”

Fudge packing causes AIDS which is a costly and often deadly disease. Think of all the lives they could save if they outlawed that.

A rabbit one day managed to break free from the laboratory where he had been born and brought up. As he scurried away from the fencing of the compound, he felt grass under his little feet and saw the dawn breaking for the first time in his life.

“Wow, this is great,” he thought. It wasn’t long before he came to a hedge and, after squeezing under it he saw a wonderful sight lots of other bunny rabbits, all free and nibbling at the lush grass.

“Hey,” he called. “I’m a rabbit from the laboratory and I’ve just escaped. Are you wild rabbits?”

“Yes. Come and join us,” they cried.

Our friend hopped over to them and started eating the grass. It tasted so good. “What else do you wild rabbits do?” he asked.

“Well,” one of them said. “You see that field there? It’s got carrots growing in it. We dig them up and eat them.”

This, he couldn’t resist and he spent the next hour eating the most succulent carrots. They were wonderful.

Later, he asked them again, “What else do you do?”

“You see that field there? It’s got lettuce growing in it. We eat them as well.”

The lettuce tasted just as good and he returned a while later completely full.

“Is there anything else you guys do?” he asked. One of the other rabbits came a bit closer to him and spoke softly.

“There’s one other thing you must try. You see those rabbits there,” he said, pointing to the far corner of the field. “They’re girls. We consort with them. Go and try it.”

Well, our rabbit friend spent the rest of the morning ensuring the survival of the species until, completely worn out, he staggered back over to the guys.

“That was fantastic,” he panted.

“So are you going to live with us then?” one of them asked.

“I’m sorry, I had a great time but I can’t.”

The wild rabbits all stared at him, a bit surprised. “Why? We thought you liked it here.”

“I do,” our friend replied. “But I must get back to the laboratory.

I’m dying for a cigarette.”

...and tend to be the worst socialists.

All things being relative, of course. There has to be something psychologically wrong with anyone who wants to control others. It's the motivation behind serial killers and serial rapists. Putting in a politically correct way such as "it's for your own good" makes no difference. Doctors are just better enabled to use that excuse.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” C.S. Lewis

They can't show their faces on threads like this because they made fun of us when we warned them this is exactly what would happen because of their support for the smoking bans.

Because you can only buy 16oz cups of soda, and people will just buy more then one, when does the tax kick in for each cup of soda purchased?

Can I still buy a two liter bottle? I don't even drink regular soda but I'd be willing to buy a two liter of Pepsi and bring my own straw to a protest.

My friend used to drink Pepsi with milk. Yuck. But does this make it a dairy beverage so can she get a big gulp?

There is no “pro” argument for this ban. IT’S NONE OF THE GOVERNMENT’S FLIPPIN BUSINESS!

The pro is that people really would be healthier if they didn't drink sugary drinks or didn't drink them to excess - assuming they don't just substitute something else unhealthy for their Big Gulp. The Nanny State activists do have that one point in their favor. The con is that IT’S NONE OF THE GOVERNMENT’S FLIPPIN BUSINESS! The con argument wins overwhelmingly.

The very thought of even having this conversation should scare the hell out of people.

When you have a government telling people what you can eat, drink, smoke, etc. You have tyranny. PERIOD!

IF the people of New York had any balls they would have Bloomberg strung up by his balls. But hey, they get what they deserve if they do nothing.

Dittos to Gabz’s comments, but I would like to add that in reality they are gutless little tyrants that have no core values. They are to weak to face the logical progression of their celebrated policies and that is proven by the fact that by supporting the nanny state, they are admitting that they are to weak to run their own lives.

I consider them great potential fertilizer for the tree of liberty....
