The wounds are always there, even if theyre not always visible from afar. Like the indentations on the Green Monster, theyre historical scars.
All it takes is a few ignorant people to reopen an old wound and reinforce an outdated stereotype. It was just 10 weeks ago that a segment of angry Bruins fans took to Twitter and spewed racially-charged insults at Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward, whose goal had eliminated the Bruins from the playoffs.
Now, weve been forced to confront Boston sports racial dark days again. Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford, on a rehabilitation assignment with Double A Portland, had a fan direct a racist comment at him during Thursday nights game in Manchester, N.H.
Crawford first said a fan called him a racial slur following the Manchester Fisher Cats 11-3 victory over Portland at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. He elaborated on the allegation Friday night.
Speaking in the Red Sox clubhouse before the series opener against the Yankees, Crawford said he was signing autographs pregame when the fan called him a Monday. This is a less familiar racial epithet, one many people might not know as a derogatory term. Urban Dictionary defines Monday as Another way of saying [the N-word] without getting caught.
Its origins are traced to the bromide about nobody liking Mondays, the first day of the new work week.

Also, those Tweets about the Capitals player were traced to Vancouver.
Well, if I truly believed that my own team’s fans (well, some of them) were using a coded racial slur, I might calmly point it out in stoic protest, once or twice.
But I wouldn’t dwell on it. There are going to be a few idiots in any group, including great groups.
I’ll bet that, IF this is true, most of the “racist” tweeters aren’t even truly racist. They just want to get a rise out of someone. I’m not against fat people, but if I were trying to heckle someone like Prince Fielder, I just might mention his weight. Similarly, someone who isn’t really racist may suspect that this guy is touchy about racial insults — and thus, this guy gets THOSE insults.
That was a classic moment!!!
Being from LA and a Dodger fan, everyone loved it when Monday became a Dodger. I am sure the O'Malley's knew that Monday would be loved in LA because of that memorable moment, and they were right.
Monday never had HoF stats, more of a solid journeyman, but the fans loved him.
I guess Ward’s publicist doesn’t realize that this race card crap doesn’t work any more......go tell someone who actually cares.
I’ve got that song on my mp3 player. I wonder what happened to the subject in that song?
At least Geldof was good in the Wall and he eliminated all hunger in Africa.
Wow... "Monday" is a racial slur? I've never of that one before. That's a totally new one to me.
We saw Carl Crawford up close during his rehab game at the Portland Sea Dogs on July 3rd - biggest crowd we've ever seen at Hadlock Field, although some in the crowd were there for the post-game fireworks, not just to see Crawford.

I'm not happy with the Crawford/Red Sox deal either. Too much money spent on him, and all we've seen are endless injuries and rehabs. Now there's a rumor he's got a problem with his elbow, another "new" injury... *rolling eyes*
Just the other day Rod Allen, commentator for the Detroit Tigers made a comment about an old photo of Fielder that would have been racist for a white reporter to make.
There was a photo of Fielder at about 12 years old swinging a bat and he was wearing rainbow tiger print sweats. Rod Allen made some comment about the tubby little brother sportin the jungle print. LOL
hmmmm....
You don’t watch much baseball, do you.
This is one reason, I no longer associate with blacks socially. You have to be sooooo careful with what you say. Anything and everything can deemed a racial slur.
You not allow to not ‘sociate with the black folks, that’s raciss.
Take some guys who are socially derelict to begin with and pour eight or nine beers in ‘em during a ballgame and you’re liable to hear just about anything.
Mr. Crawford elected a career in professional baseball and he no doubt knows this. Consider the source and don’t lower yourself to responding.
Somebody should try calling him a “Canadian”.
Perhaps he should have been called Labor Day, Memorial Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day or Columbus Day instead.
All that being said, Crawford seems to be playing like he has a terrific case of the Friday F***-its. Just coasting by, watching the clock, no extra effort.
And when your playing sucks big time, throw the blame somewhere else to distract attention, SQUIRREL!, and make a sympathy play.
There was a baseball free-agent years ago who was a very good ball player for the Twins.
His name was Lyman Bostock.
After signing a huge contract with the Angels, he had an absolutely dismal April. He was called everything in the book, and then some.
He just sucked it up and went to Gene Autry, the Angels owner, and tried to give his April salary back to the club.
No excuses. No blame flames. Just an "I suck and I'm not worth it."
yet Obama can have his billion dollar OFA fund (pronounced OFAY), and no one says a word ...
What are you talking about?? He's crying racism - that gives him 15 minutes of sympathy fame and he'll get $$$$ to help alleviate his hurt feelings.
No, call him a “cloudy day” or maybe “humid.” Or stinky.
I had not known of this - THANK YOU SO MUCH!
(yeah - honest! I didn’t. I’m seeing this for the first time. Getting kind of choked up.)
