"“I told the police officer in the dugout, pointed [the fan] out to him and all that kind of stuff,” said Crawford. “Basically, I guess I was supposed to just take it and go on and keep playing. I guess that’s how they do things down there. I don’t want to be any part of that.”

thrown out of the ball-park by the ball club maybe, but what's a cop going to do, arrest me for using a racial slur ?

Lifetime .264 batting average, .210 in post season play. His best year was 32 home runs and 77 RBI, he never again came close to those numbers. He averaged 13 home runs a year. Even a solid journeyman can have his moments in the sun. I do not use the term to diminish him in anyway, as I always liked and respected the guy.

Anyone who can play 20 years in the bigs is one heck of a ballplayer.

There was a baseball free-agent years ago who was a very good ball player for the Twins. His name was Lyman Bostock.

He was gunned down in a car about 30 years ago. His killer served no time in prison, getting off on an insanity claim.

This man recently signed a 7-year, $142 million contract with the Red Sox. He has made the MLB All-Start team 4 times (so far), he has won a Gold Glove, he was All-Star Game MVP in 2009, and he was the AL stolen base champion in 4 seasons. He was a 3 sport stud in High school and was offered a scholarship to play QB for Nebraska football.

He has neither need nor desire for 15 minutes of fame. The man is already legendary. He simply stated an incident occurred. He chose to sign with Boston, knowing its history of racial insensitivity. He doesn't expect anything to come from this. He just mentioned it during a presser and said he doesn't want to go back there again.

Lifetime .264 batting average, .210 in post season play.

A lot of his at bats were while injured (back and achilles tendon). If you look at his 1978 season, he started white hot, which is why he was the top vote getter in all star balloting, then the injury brought the numbers way down.

I am not saying he was a HoFer. He couldn't hit left handed pitching, and the Yankees lefty heavy staff and Death Valley hurt his post season numbers. I am just saying that he was a better player than his lifetime batting stats would imply. (Also keep in mind that a .260/20 HR hitter in 1968 meant a lot more than it would in 1998 with juiced up balls. Dodger Stadium, of course, is a pitcher's park. Of course Wrigley was a batter's park).

Let us also not forget that he was a very good fielder (no cannon, but covered ground, played hard, and rarely muffed a catch or throw), exhibited leadership qualities in a variety of ways, and was a quick and intelligent base runner in his youth (lead off hitter for the Cubs).

I’ll never be able to look at a calender the same way again.

Or thousands of FR threads. Look at these posts. They ALL end with a racial slur, including this one.

.....on a related note - Terry Francona shared with the audience last night that he endured 7 years of abuse from one particular Red Sox fan.

He did it with humor and even the ESPN producer and camera crew got into it and tried to find the guy in the stands.

I’ve heard many different racial slurs during my lifetime but I never heard of this one before. I think this guy Crawford is a real Tuesday.

Yes, I know. Lyman and his uncle called on woman whom Bostock tutored in school.

The woman and a friend of hers needed a ride, so Bostock and his uncle said they would give them a lift. Bostock got in the rear seat with the friend, and was seen by the friend's ex. Mr. Ex, thinking Bostock and she were an item, pulled next to the uncle's car at a stoplight and attempted to shoot the friend, but hit Bostock instead.

I believe the elbow problem was the original injury. He had another injury while rehabbing the elbow.

Wasn’t that song about the girl who gunned down her high school class and said she did it because she didn’t like Mondays? That was in San Diego about 30 years ago. I think she’s still in jail.
