Monday never had HoF stats, more of a solid journeyman, but the fans loved him.

He was certainly more than a "solid "journeyman".

He was the top vote getter in the 1978 All Star balloting when he tore up the league until he tore his Achille's tendon. He won the NLCS for the Dodgers against the Expos in '81. Three teams in 18 years is hardly "journey man".

If he had any weaknesses, it was left handed pitchers, and of course a propensity for bad injuries, sometimes from playing too zealously (the back injury came from running full speed into a brick wall).

It is no coincidence that the Dodgers made the World Series when Monday was healthy. Sure beat the heck out of Derrel "the sissie" Thomas and Gary "Punch and Judy Hitter and Yankee Cast-Off" Thomasson.

Lifetime .264 batting average, .210 in post season play. His best year was 32 home runs and 77 RBI, he never again came close to those numbers. He averaged 13 home runs a year. Even a solid journeyman can have his moments in the sun. I do not use the term to diminish him in anyway, as I always liked and respected the guy.

Anyone who can play 20 years in the bigs is one heck of a ballplayer.
