Der Spiegel Turns on Obama
National Review Online ^ | June 13, 2012 | John Fund

Posted on 06/13/2012 6:28:32 PM PDT by neverdem

In July 2008, the leading German newsmagazine Der Spiegel couldn’t contain itself in its reporting on Barack Obama’s speech in Berlin. The coverage was rapturous.

“The people of Berlin experienced the full range of Barack Obama’s charisma on Thursday evening,” it enthused. “At times he was reserved, at others engaging. Sometimes combative, and also demanding.” Der Spiegel called him “the trans-Atlantic bridge builder” who wowed 200,000 Germans as he proved himself a “save the world orator” who would expunge the evils of the unpopular Bush administration.

My, how times have changed. This week — almost exactly four years later — Der Spiegel is back with a cover story featuring a glum and dejected Obama: “Sad,” the headline reads. “Obama’s Unlucky Presidency.”

The article inside notes that “Obama has not lived up to the high expectations Europeans had of him.” It reads like the kind of plaintive wail about lost opportunities we hear from American liberals.

Der Spiegel’s main source for its conclusions is a new global survey by the Pew Research Center showing approval of Obama’s policies has declined significantly, and especially in Germany: “Germans are disappointed in the U.S. president’s unilaterialism; his use of force, particularly drone strikes; his inaction with regard to the Israeli-Palestinian situation and his lack of effort in curbing climate change.” Still, nine of out of ten Germans want Obama reelected, which just goes to show how left-wing post–Cold War Germany has become and how bad Mitt Romney’s press has been in Deutschland.

Nonetheless, Obama has done nothing to shore up support for American leadership in the world. In fact, he has presided over a decline. The Pew survey found only 52 percent of Germans have a favorable view of the United States. That’s down twelve points since Obama’s election in 2008, with ten points of that drop coming just in the last year. Germans also believe the world has passed America by: Only 13 percent believe the U.S. is the world’s leading economic superpower, while 62 percent accord that status to China.

The reasons for German disappointment with Obama may differ dramatically from those of many Americans, but it’s clear that the bloom is off the Obama rose not only for his domestic admirers but also for the foreigners he so successfully seduced during the era of “hope and change.”

Only 13 percent believe the U.S. is the world’s leading economic superpower, while 62 percent accord that status to China.

And so most Germans are now learning and speaking Chinese?

I don't think so...

Just so. Der Spiegel is the German equivalent of TIME Magazine.

It would be terrible (from Obama’s position) if the MSM turned on Dear Leader, but they sense blood in the water and they cannot fight the “Great White Shark” part of their natures. Hello, dinner.

“Obama’s Unlucky Presidency.”

Not "unlucky". It's all self-inflicted.

So let me get this straight. The U.S. as a nation has a lower approval rating than before The One was "immaculated." But then 9 out of 10 Germans want him re-elected?

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot?

And Hitler didn't need a teleprompter (I don't think they had them in his day).

Hitler could write a few words on a piece of paper and give an hour speech from that (a gift he shared with Lenin and few others).

[. . .nine of out of ten Germans want Obama reelected. . .]

This is the effect two centuries of war and the decimation of able bodied males has on the national gene pool.

Maybe by saying “unlucky presidency” they meant unlucky for the rest of us.

We should have just “cleansed” Germany in 1945 - made it the 51st state.

They’re all guilty as far as I’m concerned. They’re all responsible for millions dead in two world wars. I could give a rats ass for the whole damn place.

Such a belief on your part is no better than the beliefs that led to what occurred under Nazism. Might want to do some soul searching.

I totally agree! How stupid are the German people? Or at least 90% of them, kind of like the 98% blacks here in the US that voted for 0dumb0. I guess the Germans just have a thing for narssistic totalitarian despots... Hitler, 0dumb0, etc., you know!

Germany and It’s people have little love for the USA and It’s people. They have too many memories of WWII leavingwithout the post war aid. Besides the monetary control of the western world has always been tied closely to Germany. Think of the Fed Reserve established in the USA. Think about the Rothchilds and their international financial cabal including start ups for the likes of Soros and even the Rockefeller empire. Germany has for years been a self constructive nation of domination. I say this with admiration for the Germans like my matriarchal roots but also a weariness that they do not understand, intentionally or out of ignorance, the kind of government our Founders intended.
