Romney's passive response to Obama's change of tune on gay marriage
Boston Globe | May 13, 2012 | Garrett Quinn

Posted on 05/13/2012 7:34:34 PM PDT by WilliamIII

The most striking thing about President Obama's flip-flop evolution reversal on gay marriage was how weakly the likely Republican standard bearer, Mitt Romney, has gone after him for it.

Shortly after the Obama's change of heart went public Romney addresed it at press conference in Oklahoma. Watch here as he gives a mostly tempered response when asked about his views on gay marriage.

Not only did Romney answer that question with no passion but he repeatedly called his position on the issue "his preference". At first glance it seems hard to understand why his campaign would not capitalize on this potential gift, particularly after a rocky primary showed he has problems with Christian evangelicals. Obama's support for gay marriage is just the type of thing Romney needs to energize an unmotivated evangelical base to man phones, knock on doors, and go to the polls.

Then this memo from a top GOP pollster dropped.

"Support for same sex marriage has been growing and in the last few years support has grown at an accelerated rate with no sign of slowing down. ..."

Methinks Mitt is sitting back and letting Barry-O do himself in. Mitt probably thinks the Prez needs no help...

Romney has deep pocketed gay donors as well.

I'm against gay marriage as much as anybody here. I'm against it for the same reasons people here in FR are against it but also because it would increase immigration of gays from overseas marrying gay American men in the US for VISAs.

That being said, Romney needs to state his stance on gay marriage and then get back on the real issues Americans are so desperate for someone to be able to fix: Jobs, Economy and energy. Republicans can be the party that stands for the Economy / Jobs / Energy while defining Obama as OUT OF TOUCH with the real issues.

Is this writer liberal?

It seems odd that the writer is puzzled at Romney’s tepid response to the president. It’s almost as if the writer expected and wanted Romney to jump right up and denounce homosexual marriage.

But, we don’t want this campaign to be about homosexual marriage. There are so many other issues to talk about.

Remember not too long ago, the media and liberals expressed frustration at Santorum and Republicans for talking about marriage, birth control, etc. Now they are frustrated at Romney for not enthusiastically talking about this stuff.

What exactly is supposed to happen to make the media happy?

Or are they angry that Romney didn’t take the bait, so to speak, and get out there about marriage like they expected him to????

Romney is the GOP version of an NWO shill, same as Obama is/was for the democrats. When the pace is too fast, as with Obama, they back off to a “conservative” for a few years till we adapt to the new conservatism. That’s the best the GOP can give us? That doesn’t say much for the GOP. We got Clinton that re-energized the GOP base. Then we got Obama that re-energized the GOP base. They make a lot of money when conservatives aren’t happy. Then all they can deliver is a paper puppet in a silk suit. Pull the stuffing out, nothing there.

Romney will win the election if he answers every diversionary question with- “I know that may seem important but I’d like to focus on jobs.”

Here's a link to the column: click.

It is axiomatic that when one's opponent is in the process of making a political blunder, the proper thing to do strategically is -- nothing. Ergo, Romney is in this case doing the right thing -- nothing, or close to it, a tepid non-response.

It could be argued that Obama "had to" make the statement that he did on gay marriage in order to mollify his base. But he then made an unforced error by permitting his political website to advertise t-shirts for infants emblazoned with "My Two Moms Support Obama," and "My Two Dads Support Obama." Also available: lovely apparel items touting the love of Obama by transgendered people. Who in the Obama brain trust thought that was a good idea?

So, again, if the other guy is drowning, don't throw him a life preserver. It may be that support of gay marriage may help Obama in California, and in a few other states where he's already likely to win. But it will be a net negative in swing states like Ohio and Florida. The columnist is obviously trying to bait Romney into escalating the gay marriage debate, probably to detract from discussions on the economy, where the real battle will be waged, and where Obama is most vulnerable.

Romney has always been a cowardly “me too” liberal.

Watch the Etch-a-Sketch candidate repeat his past campaigns by running scared from the scumbag Democrat newsrooms and drifting relentlessly left, right up to election day. The guy is a liar and scumbag, and he cannot be trusted, ever.

Not just him but the whole R party and FNC.

Did you see FNC gay Shepard Smith’s reaction that he hopes Republicans don’t criticize Obama on this and instead stay on the ‘right side of history’ on this SS marriage crap??

Good point, either jobs or the sorry state of the American economy.

I wonder what Mitt meant here?

“We must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern,”
