COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A free annual Easter egg hunt held in Old Colorado City was canceled because "aggressive" parents were grabbing too many eggs for their children.
Thousands of candy-filled plastic eggs are scattered across Bancroft Park every year for children to find and collect, KXRM reported.
But organizers said some parents were too aggressive and took too many of the eggs, leaving some children empty-handed.

It was loads of fun hunting for eggs at home with my brother and sister. Only one year did we go to the town event (it was a very small town) and I remember it being no fun at all. Some kids were so worked up that they were even stealing eggs out of other kids baskets and kids were crying and parents were getting upset. Hunting at home had a kind of majical quality about it, but the organized hunt was like a sporting event. Might have been fun for older kids, but when you are like 4 years old, you don’t want to get mugged on Easter.
We used to always have our own Easter egg hunts. Sometimes it was at home, sometimes with extended family. I remember my Dad patiently hiding all the eggs numberous times. (Why have only one Easter egg hunt?) We always colored at least one dozen eggs a few days before.....it was so much fun.
I don’t understand parents who do this.
ah yes the old adult conversation time. I remember those days! go outside and play it’s adult time
Growing up in Philly I saw that any "free" event would invite the moocher class to take over with the inevitable outcomes.
When you’ve Socialized a group of people with democracy for about 100 years it only results in the mob rule of animals!
I’ll bet that was colorful!
Parents can be dorks.
On one side are hyper-competitive, often hyper-controlling parents that fight to get their children into “Ivy League Preschools”, and drive their children to be successful (by the parents inflated standards) at all costs. Often easy to tell because 5th graders shouldn’t be having nervous breakdowns from unending psychological abuse.
The on the other side are parents who are so terrified of anything even slightly competitive or indicative of success or failure that they try to force their children and their children’s peers into perpetual mediocrity and insulation from anything challenging or stimulating. Less easy to spot except that they want to compete over everything.
Then add what had been a holiday, but is now an event based almost exclusively on nauseating levels of sugar, decorated with pagan fertility designs and a smattering of Christianity in a vague and tenuous connection, instead of what should be their most important religious holiday of the year.
In the midst of this, having children wear pseudo-nostaligic, uncomfortable and odd looking costumes while mucking about on an overgrown lawn looking for brightly pastel colored boiled chicken eggs (alternatively egg shaped chocolate balls filled with some unknown and grotesque substance) and faux-chocolate caricatures of Leporidae.
Gee, what’s not to like?
I bought so many cookies from co-workers at the office over the years that I thought "Girl Scout" was the brand name........
I took my daughters to ONE of these, ONCE. They made a circle of string around a large hunting area; and three areas for older, middle, and little kids; repeatedly announced NO PARENTS to enter the stringed area.
When the “go” signal was made, half the parents ran in their to “help” their kids. I did not, of course, my daughters got a small handfuls, and were really being pushed around.
By adults.
Yes, they broke the rules going in there. They showed no concern about it, and nothing was done about it. I guess what are you going to do? Arrest them?
It was disgusting.
One Easter in Juneau, Alaska the hunt was ruined by a huge flock of ravens that swooped in ahead of the kids and stole nearly all the colored eggs.
I learned early on that “if it’s Free, it’s not for me”.
True that.
Then they could have held a fun family Easter raven shoot instead...
And we have our winner!
If parents had more children, they could stay home and do this as a family.
As wants have become “needs”, our selfish culture has turned from God and Family.
We did the same. The year that my younger daughter ended up with nothing because a mom encouraged a 12-year-old to get eggs for her little sister, I said no more.
We don’t need all the stupid candy anyway.
We do “in the dark” egg hunts with flashlights. At 12 and 14 they still want to do it, even if the eggs are empty.
LOL - nice. First time I've seen Leporidae used in a sentence at FR.
Personally, I prefer the faux-chocolate caricature of the rare Oligocene Paleolagus.
When I think of Old Colorado City, I think of the Meadow Muffin!
It was a small city lot. My parents came home.
Bless my dear dad...all he did was smile, and told us to wash the egg off the house when we were done.
LOLOLOL!
What a great Dad!
