SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico The plodding Republican presidential nomination fight is grinding forward toward Puerto Rico and a two-man race, with Rick Santorum ascendant and Mitt Romney vanquished in the Deep South.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the former Georgia lawmaker whose Southern strategy stalled, was all but relegated to an asterisk in the contest even as he vowed to stay in it.
Now is the time to pull together, Santorum declared to conservatives in Lafayette, La., after winning Tuesdays primaries in Alabama and Mississippi, urging the partys faithful to unite behind him to beat Romney. We are campaigning everywhere there are delegates because we are going to win this nomination before the convention.

Romney or Anti-Romney. Your choice.
Same for our conservative leaders nationwide.
With apologies to Karl Rove and Lindsey Graham and Meghan McCain, all who must be having one AWFUL, bad-hair morning today. (Except maybe Karl, who would be having one every day). ....
YES INDEED!!!EAGLES UP!!!!!!WOOHOO
GOP-e FAIL.
...he can't beat Rick on his own.
Thanks Newt, your patriotism is only outweighed by your ego and when Obama beats Mitt we will thank you again as we are trucked off to the camps.
Puerto Rico is not a typical demographic by any stretch of the imagination, but their delegates count just as much as anyone else’s in this primary.
We appear to have Freepers “on the ground” as shown in this thread with lots of detail on that race and what makes Puerto Rico tick: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2852420/posts
I don't know who “cll” is but I strongly suggest that Santorum and Gingrich supporters contact him ASAP and find out what he can do to help defeat Romney.
Many congratulations to Senator Santorum!
I of course, am so disappointed that Gingrich was unable to win, but I have to give props to Santorum. Great job!
(I am now returning to my 100% Newt support!)
...shows good conservative character—now ask him to please drop out;)
Gingrich is the only conservative in this race; Santorum and Romney are virtually identical big-government nanny-staters, and the GOP-e wants Romney only because they think that Santorum’s self-righteous preachiness will be a turn-off in the general elections. Otherwise the two are the same.
What this says to me is that GOP voters have now adopted the socialist welfare-state as the default model and are only opposed to Obama because they want it in a different package. And in the general elections, most voters overall will be happy with the current package and vote for Obama, since neither Santorum or Romney offers any substantive differences.
"LisaL 11. ITA. Romney is a perfect candidate to run against." -- (Democratic Underground, 14 March 2012, thread on Santorum sweep in the South.)
I think that is the first time I have heard (outside of from a communist or two here or there) that there is "not a dimes worth of difference between Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum". Wow.
Examine their opinions. Romney also gets pretty good ratings as a conservative. I’m not talking about social positions, btw.
Puerto Rico Ping! Please Freepmail me if you want on or off the list.
Can Gingrich still win the nomination or is it numerically impossible?
Does it bother you that the most conservative condidates, at least by your measure of "Conservative Lobbying and Public Interest Groups", are more or less out of the race while more nominal conservatives are embraced? While Santorum would be better than Romney, he is, at best, a big government Republican. Do you really think that America needs a big spending, big government Republican to save us from the big spending, big government Democrat in office? Why? Because he isn't as socialistic?
LOL!
I know you will take this with a grain of salt, but I really believe that the only way to beat Romney is for both Newt and Rick to stay in. I was mulling it over while walking the dog this AM, and it occurred to me: Why is Fox News and Drudge so frantic to get Newt out? It can’t be because they are now Rick supporters! If the media had any class at all, they’d be calling for the LOSER, Mitt to drop out!
The hair on Turd Blossom’s head is standing on end.
He can take his little white board and shove it.
I used to live in New Mexico. I'm aware of the fights for many years to get statehood for New Mexico, and I'm aware of the issues in Congress in the late 1800s and early 1900s with people who tried to keep New Mexico out of the Union on the grounds that it was not sufficiently American. The New Mexico territory was finally divided in half and admitted as two separate states.
Precedents count. I cannot see any good reason that mandatory English-only requirements should be imposed on Puerto Rico as a condition of statehood when that has never been done before with a state. Also, given population shifts, Puerto Rico does not pose a demographic or cultural threat to the United States; we've got serious concerns with assimilation of Mexican immigrants along our southwest border, but Puerto Rico is not exactly a center of population growth.
BTW, before Michigan was a state, for quite some time after not only the American Revolution but also the War of 1812, the English-speaking residents were considered likely British sympathizers and it was the French-speaking people who the American government considered trustworthy. Granted, by the time Michigan was admitted to statehood, French-speaking fur traders and trappers were receding into irrelevance as English-speaking farmers were beginning to fill up the southern counties.
Yes, the dumb-as-a-box-of-rocks, whiny, preacher, sweater vest boy wins again. LOL! And yet, what do I see in the WSJ today, what election, huh? What did I see on Fox last night, what election, huh? The whole Republican establishment is looking for a fresh diaper this morning.
