Was Newt Gingrich Really an Enemy of Ronald Reagan? (Two 'in the know' say Good Lord , NO!)

COMMENTARY | The latest attack against Newt Gingrich accuses him of the worst thing a Republican can be. Apparently, despite his assertion that he was a loyal lieutenant to President Ronald Reagan, Gingrich was "insulting" to Reagan on a number of occasions.

Leading the charge on the theme of "Gingrich was an enemy of Reagan" is Elliott Abrams, who was an assistant secretary of state in the Reagan administration. ..

To be sure, the speech seems off-putting considering subsequent events, such as the fall of the Soviet Empire. But was Gingrich really an enemy of Reagan?

William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection does not think so. He quotes two people with impeccable credentials that demonstrate that Gingrich was indeed a young supporter of Reagan.

One was Jeffrey Lord, who worked with both Reagan and Gingrich in those years, writing a defense in the American Spectator. Lord asserts that Gingrich was indeed a loyal supporter of Reagan.

.. In a speech in 1995, Ms. Reagan noted that the torch of conservatism had passed from Barry Goldwater to Reagan and had then passed on to Gingrich. Gingrich is not only Reagan's supporter, but Reagan's heir.

Reagan's son Michael Reagan has also endorsed Gingrich, according to Fox News.

The media and pundits with agendas and the clueless remain a fractious element of this Grand Old Experiment WE call Liberty and FReedom for All .. They were around before this nation was established .. and like cockroaches, will likely be around after its demise is complete.

I watched the interview with Michael Reagan. It was good and informative.

He was fully supportive of Newt Gingrich and mentioned Nancy Reagan’s speech giving NEWT Gingrich the Torch for Reagan Conservatives.

When I think of Newt sitting beside Pelosi supporting the earth temperature rising paranoia I believe he very well could be a chameleon. Only those who see under the skin will know the truth.

My take on Peggy Noonan's column this week is that she also says, No, Newt is not an enemy of Ronald Reagan. However, his claim that he, Newt, took Reagan from Governor of California to President of the United States was over-reaching. Remember, Peggy worked in the Reagan White House, so she's pretty knowledgeable about those times and those people.

The GOP Takes a Wild Ride ~~ Peggy Noonan

As for the history, Newt was new to Washington and had been in Congress two years, a backbencher, when Reagan was sworn in. He had almost nothing to do with Reagan's achievements.

He was a politician looking for attention. He talked a lot, took to the floor a lot, and was sometimes impressive. He was excited by C-Span: It showed America he was there. Usually he said things that were supportive of conservative aims, sometimes not; sometimes he lauded Reagan, sometimes not.

...It was after Reagan left that Mr. Gingrich became a leader, spearheading the insurgency that resulted in the 1994 Republican takeover of the House. ...

It doesn’t matter any more - the damage is done.

You are right, the damage is done — to Mitt. Those of us who lived during those Reagan’s days and after his many liberal changes don’t necessarily like Newt, but will vote for him because of these vicious lies of Romney. How can someone who actually did all he could to work against Reagan dare call any one who supported Reagan his enemy? I was just going to waste my vote or not even bother to vote. But Romney has me so disgusted that I am going to cast a protest vote. I am voting for Newt because Romney is so vile, so much like Obama, that he must be stopped. We must do what the democrats could not do to their filthy lying poseur. We must stop the white and not so delightsome version of Obama, Mitt Romney, by voting for Newt. That is how I am voting on Tuesday.

For every one of you there'll be 50 who believed the false story - such is the power of superPAC big money, free speech - it doesn't need to be fair, or true.
