pro-choice

anti-second amendment

pro-taxes

pro-spending

but election year promises to..what? Secure the border? Build a fence? What?

Perry knows what's needed. Cain makes outlandish jokes and Romney can't be trusted on pretty much anything.

Perry is obviously the best guy all around.

I believe in empowerment zones. Most of the unemployed black Americans in this country are in these mostly economically depressed areas. It could be, and I’m only using this as an example, because we haven’t finished establishing the parameters yet. Instead of in a designated empowerment zone, it being 9-9-9, it could be, as an example only, 3-3-3.

What this does, because you have a lot of African-Americans located in cities like Detroit, disproportionately, it would encourage businesses to stay in business there or to move there. It would encourage people to work there, because if you live in the empowerment zone, you’re going to pay a smaller percentage in taxes.”

Herman Cain 4 days ago on CNN.

That sounds Conservative to you? Have you checked out remarks from his own pastor on the government role in making things socially equal?

That was when he was running in Massachussetts. He was running against Ted Kennedy when he said most of that stuff and was saying what the needed to say to win. Since he was running against Teddy as far as I am concerned what ever it takes to win is justified. Perry is rated D- by numbers usa and Romney is the highest at C- of all our Republican candidates. I wish it was higher but if we don’t win on this one the ‘crats will turn this country into a third world diversity society and we will all be screwed and they will do what ever they want. It won’t be pretty.

The establishment hack in 3rd place is the best conservative hope? That’s some odd reasoning.

I've said it before on this website, and I'll say it again now.

Too many self-proclaimed conservatives are politically illiterate and ill-prepared to win because they are always constantly bickering amongst themselves over minutia - while 'Rome burns.'

A good 90% of posters here have never once gone to their own district, much less county or state, GOP meetings. They talk big, but don't contribute a whit toward keeping their state and local GOP conservative. Hence, they learn little about what makes a candidate viable in a knock-down drag-out election against Democrats and their lying media supporters.

Leftist media consistently work hard to split the conservative vote - causing nomination of the least conservative candidate, if possible. They pulled that off with McCain - and they hope to do it again with Romney... if they can somehow destroy Perry's chances.

Cain isn't going anywhere. No money, no organization, and little hope of building either, particularly with his 999 plan falling apart under close scrutiny. Lefty-media know this well - so of course they're going to give him as much play as they can in order to split conservatives.

Pay little attention to the gab on FR... because those falling into this media-orchestrated trap nationally represent a tiny fraction of conservatism within the so-called 'grass-roots GOP.'

Conservatism demands far more than wishful thinking. It demands daily action where the rubber meets the road, on the street and within the GOP in every state - and that action at the moment isn't in Cain's favor, it is thankfully in Perry's.

That’s very grandiose talk.

Thing is though Perry killed his own chances with his own crap style and crap views on immigration.

"... Perry killed his own chances with his own crap style and crap views on immigration."

That is your crap view - not Perry's. Perry's 'views' on immigration have been amply stated and acted on in Texas.

In short, Perry is against "sanctuary cities" for illegal immigrants and favors legislation that would allow local officers to request information on a person's immigration status - and be enabled to throw illegals back across the border once those officers see that someone is here illegally.

He favored a Texas law that allows the children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates at Texas colleges and universities. NOTE carefully, they must PAY. They are not a drain on either the state of Texas or the US taxpayer. In fact, they contribute to the education establishment.

As governor of Texas, Perry increased security operations along the border with Mexico and increased funding for border security. He doesn't favor a fence, but he wants the FEDS to do their job, which isn't being done.

He has used state police to protect the border from Mexican drug cartels, and has repeatedly asked the FEDS to do more to secure our borders - not just in Texas, but all of it, both north and south.

I just wanted to say that Herman Cain won’t kill all the illegals or build a 5-mile deep minefield between Mexico and America. Nor will he simply deport them all.

Herman Cain is weak on immigration.

We need someone tough on immigration, and Cain ain’t the one! There’s no way I could vote for anyone so weak on immigration!

” NOTE carefully, they must PAY.”

A special reduced rate. Cause it would be “heartless” to make them pay full price. That signifies a namby pamby Bush-style attitude on the whole thing.

And it’s not “children of illegal immigrants” we are talking about here cause if they were born here they are citizens (unfortunately under current flawed interpretation of the law) and if they are residents of Texas they get the reduced rate like any other citizen. These are actual illegal immigrants we are talking about. Ones brought here as children by their parents. It’s not their fault, I wouldn’t deport them if they lived here their whole life but they can’t be given special benefits. Their parents’ crimes cannot be rewarded and it’s not right that a non-American citizen who resides in Texas gets cheaper college but a citizen from across the border in Oklahoma would have to pay full. That’s disgusting.

No and no. I need to check the context of the former, and school up on the latter.

I didn't want to come off wrong CL but I hate identity politics. I think Cain in his hear is a Conservative man on issues of life and probably business but I don't like, I hate affirmative action and government picking the winners and losers.

I’m completely with you. Empowerment zones are a classic example of what I DO NOT want to see the government doing. I understand they need to collect taxes to exist and provide services (like military protection from external enemies). That’s fine. But when the government starts tweaking taxes to intentionally modify people’s behavior, I part company with them. It’s one reason I’m against the mortgage interest deduction.

If Cain, Santorum and Bachmann passes away than he might be 2nd or 3rd with the left over group of republican candidates. Perry next to those three mentioned definitely shows that he is a liberal. He is so far liberal compared to Santorum and Bachmann. And with Cain he is completely liberal. Luckily he self imploded and is getting about 3 percent support....most of them sadly are RINOs on this site.

Why would you say that? Only because you’ve been brainwashed by Cain supporters on this forum.

Is it because you think he has no border plan?

Is it because of the ridiculous tuition accusation. Someone said last nite that over 20 states have a similar plan, many with less requirements than Texas.

Perry has had to actually deal with the problem of a porous border and a population that’s increasingly Mexican in the state.

He’s done a fabulous job of keeping the state conservative, advancing conservative values, creating a business friendly environment, keeping Texas free of state income tax, keeping our economy rolling well when other states are faltering.

I hope you will reconsider your unjustified prejudice against Perry on illegals. He’s walked the walk and done it well. This infighting here, particularly against Perry... really nasty... may well end up giving the nomination to Romney. We would almost deserve that.

Eleven years ago the Texas legislature voted almost unanimously to grant in-state tuition rates to children of illegals who met certain requirements. This was not free tuition nor was it cheap tuition (the vast majority taking advantage go to community colleges which are rather inexpensive) Perry couldn’t have blocked this legisation if he had wanted to, it was veto proof.

However, he, like most others, and like many other states felt that it would be a good thing overall.

It has nothing whatever to do with border security. It’s really opened my eyes to the visceral hatred that many on Free Republic have for Mexicans, legal and illegal, the attitude they have about Perry for this simple and relatively inexpensive concession to the children, whose parents have done something illegal, but they have not.

In terms of dollars and cents, it’s spit in the ocean.

Perry has a border plan. It’s no 9-9-9, let’s just build a fence plan. It is far more sophisticated. In case you didn’t know it, he even went to Israel to confer with experts there on protecting borders. (and he is a big supporter of Israel)

Rush said that he is probably the best hope to defeat Obama but some on this forum are so caught up in the Cain mania, they can’t focus on reality.

Cain could win, but it would be a long shot, and his fiscal ignorance was pretty apparent in the debate, as was his foreign policy smarts. But I won’t spend time criticizing Cain, as the Cain supporters seem to spend their lives criticizing Perry, as if that will help Cain.

I liked Cain, but a little icy thing entered my heart when Cain attacked Perry on the Washington Post bogus rock story.

It scared me. Not just because I like Perry and not just because it was so unfair, but because I thought it revealed something about Mr. Cain.

I’m really afraid he would end up with an agenda we don’t need in this country. I hope he loses the nomination.

He’s the hot ticket right now, but the country ‘voted cute’ last time and I hope the Republicans don’t vote cute in getting a nominee.

But the worst thing is the carrying the poor dog on top of the car in the luggage rack. Does anyone have a picture of that.

Poor doggy.

Someone said judge people on how they treat people under them. How about how they treat their dogs?

Good list but you left off one important thing.

Perry instigated tort reform in Texas. Getting the lawyers off the backs of doctors is a great thing and doctors are moving to Texas as a result and moving away from lawsuit happy states.

But you and I and many other intelligent posters are fighting a losing battle here with the infatuated Cain voters who have fallen in love with a man who has rhetoric and no record.

It’s not special benefits. It’s the same tuition all Texas students pay.

Why do you people want to focus on an insignificant issue?

You can’t handle the truth????
