Homeland Security moves forward with 'pre-crime' detection (Big Government™ is watching you)

An internal U.S. Department of Homeland Security document indicates that a controversial program designed to predict whether a person will commit a crime is already being tested on some members of the public voluntarily, CNET has learned.

If this sounds a bit like the Tom Cruise movie called "Minority Report," or the CBS drama "Person of Interest," it is. But where "Minority Report" author Philip K. Dick enlisted psychics to predict crimes, DHS is betting on algorithms: it's building a "prototype screening facility" that it hopes will use factors such as ethnicity, gender, breathing, and heart rate to "detect cues indicative of mal-intent."

The latest developments, which reveal efforts to "collect, process, or retain information on" members of "the public," came to light through an internal DHS document obtained under open-government laws by the Electronic Privacy Information Center. DHS calls its "pre-crime" system Future Attribute Screening Technology, or FAST.

I don’t think it’s the DHS that’s the problem. There’s a lot about that reorganization of agencies that made a lot of sense. Getting the Coast Guard out of Transportation was good. Putting customs and immigration under the same roof was good. Some other reorgs too.

I’ve never cared much for the name, though. Maybe we can fix that.

Maybe they could test the technology on TSA goons to weed out the ones who steal valuables from luggage.

Will this "algorithm" include racial and ethnic profiling? If not, it is useless and worthless. -- just like TSA's selective "grope&grab" at airports.

Don't get me wrong: I don't approve of this "algorithm / database" OR this: Supremes Deciding How Close Government Can Watch You.

Stuffed shirt bureaucrats, flush with taxpayer dollars, are going to buy as many toys as they can, assemble them into a big white elephant, and then they’ll pretend they’re doing something useful —nay, something critical to national security— with it. Later, when it becomes clear that it is worthless, it will be dismantled and the HSA will find something else to lobby for. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Somehow I suspect that the algorithm will be simplified to focus only on party affiliation.

the same dhs that views returning veterans, limited-government proponents, metal=based currency proponents as potential threats, etc.

This stuff is going to be looked at in 20 years as the foundations of the legal mechanisms of a police state.
