An internal U.S. Department of Homeland Security document indicates that a controversial program designed to predict whether a person will commit a crime is already being tested on some members of the public voluntarily, CNET has learned.
If this sounds a bit like the Tom Cruise movie called "Minority Report," or the CBS drama "Person of Interest," it is. But where "Minority Report" author Philip K. Dick enlisted psychics to predict crimes, DHS is betting on algorithms: it's building a "prototype screening facility" that it hopes will use factors such as ethnicity, gender, breathing, and heart rate to "detect cues indicative of mal-intent."
The latest developments, which reveal efforts to "collect, process, or retain information on" members of "the public," came to light through an internal DHS document obtained under open-government laws by the Electronic Privacy Information Center. DHS calls its "pre-crime" system Future Attribute Screening Technology, or FAST.

i began to write a story about this some years ago, but never finished it. the premise was that they came looking for you when you did something that was an “outlier” according to your profile.
Sounds kinda racist to me. Kinda like profiling too.
And America will bend over and take it.
I wonder if we can make a FOIA request for the algorithms and input/weighting factors used? I would love to know how this works. I’d be willing to bet a couple months pay that firearms ownership, being straight, non-minority, employed, and anything but a registered democrat weighs against you and makes you a suspect...of their brave new socialist paradise...
“Hate crimes” - criminalizing thought - opened the door for this.
Bill Ayers could be carrying a bomb and his heart rate wouldn't go up - he's a liberal - and DHS doesn't care about getting a liberal any more than Larry Flynt cares about getting a liberal...
Of course there will be exceptions for terrorists and other “victims”.

When President Bush announced the creation of a DEpartment of Homeland Security I was incensed and fearful for the future of freedom.
Sometimes you just hate to be correct.
Sounds like profiling. They SHOULD be taking ethnicity, etc. etc. into account.

Well, the first place this should be used is on every single person in the Red House inner circle, the czars, the various secretaries and department heads with the. Obummer and Eric Holder should be the first.
Then put one on each member of congress.

I don’t think it’s the DHS that’s the problem. There’s a lot about that reorganization of agencies that made a lot of sense. Getting the Coast Guard out of Transportation was good. Putting customs and immigration under the same roof was good. Some other reorgs too.
I’ve never cared much for the name, though. Maybe we can fix that.

Stuffed shirt bureaucrats, flush with taxpayer dollars, are going to buy as many toys as they can, assemble them into a big white elephant, and then they’ll pretend they’re doing something useful —nay, something critical to national security— with it. Later, when it becomes clear that it is worthless, it will be dismantled and the HSA will find something else to lobby for. Lather, rinse, repeat.

the same dhs that views returning veterans, limited-government proponents, metal=based currency proponents as potential threats, etc.
This stuff is going to be looked at in 20 years as the foundations of the legal mechanisms of a police state.
