The Elephant in the Green Room [LONG - Ailes moving Fox away from Palin & the TPM going into 2012]
New York Mag ^ | May 22, 2011 | Gabriel Sherman

[...]

Ailes is the most successful executive in television,.... So it must have been disturbing to Ailes when the wheels started to come off .........Last summer, he’d invited Christie to dinner at his upstate compound along with Rush Limbaugh,....he fell hard for Christie, .......He still speaks almost daily with George H. W. Bush,...

[...]

“He thinks things are going in a bad direction,” another Republican close to Ailes told me. “.....He thinks the election of Obama is a disaster. He thinks Palin is an idiot..."

[...]

For Ailes, Tucson was a turning point,.... Ailes began to doubt Palin’s political instincts. He .....saw her erratic behavior as a sign that she is a “loose cannon,” as one person close to him put it. .... As the media pounced on Palin’s rhetoric, Palin wanted to fight back. She felt it was deeply unfair.... Ailes agreed but told her to stay out of it. He thought if she stayed quiet, she would score a victory....

Palin ignored Ailes’s advice and went ahead and released her now-infamous “blood libel” video the morning Obama traveled to Tucson. For Ailes, the move was further evidence that Palin was flailing around off-message. “Why did you call me for advice?” he wondered out loud to colleagues.

[...]

Last week, Ailes turned 71. He’s spending considerable time thinking about his legacy.... But there’s other unfinished business, which is why Chris Christie is so appealing....Ailes saw in Christie a great candidate: an ordinary guy, someone you’d be comfortable talking to over your back fence. But Ailes may have seen something else. Christie’s got Fox News TV values with a ready-made reel. And of course, Obama versus Christie is a producer’s dream: .....just maybe, Ailes could laugh all the way to the White House and the bank.

This piece is very long and much more is covered than I've excerpted here, including Ailes and his relationship with Glenn Beck and his intent to steer Fox away from pushing the Tea Party movement.

Is the "Republican close to Ailes" GHWB? Who knows but this article states that he and Ailes are very close.

QUOTES BY AILES about Sarah Palin ARE UNSUBSTANTIATED, ANONYMOUS SOURCE(S)

I don’t buy this!

Everytime I hear “anonymous Republican source” about Palin and the Tea Party i discount it as lies....how do we know that Ailes said or is doing these things?

I’ve all but given up on Fox. It is more of the same stuff. The Tea Party could care less about Mr. Ailes. He can drag up Jeb from Florida or Christie from NJ and watch his ratings go into the sewer if he wants. And, he can take Krauthammer and crew with him.

I disagree. There are times in personal relationships where that IS what you need to do, but Republicans don't have any other mode when someone accuses them of something. They either "stay above the fray" and end up with the public assuming whatever they're accused of must be true, or they go on a preemptive apology tour, with even worse results. If conservatives never fight back when libs fight dirty, the libs have no disincentive to run it up the flagpole each and every time. They have nothing to lose.

Uh, dude? (Ailes, not you, Al) In a relationship between Fox and the Tea Party, you're not the ones doing the "pushing"; you're hanging on to THEIR coattails and along for the ride. Patriots aren't going to give up on the TP because you ignore them, but covering them might rehabilitate YOUR image.

Doesn't Saudia Arabia have a vested interest in Fox?

Didn't Christie appoint a Muslim Judge to the New Jersey Court?

Connection?

GHWB, ROVE and ROLLINS.

The first is still smartin’ from the blowback Sarah gave to wife Barbara for her snarky remark to Larry King about Sarah.

Rove has it in for Sarah Palin and is still going out of his way to recruit any and every RINO to run.

Rollins was Huckabee’s guy, so there ya go...LOL.

ALL potential liar/leakers.

So Ailes has become the sort of ego whose opinion you dare not ask unless you’re ready to follow whatever he says.

I sure as heck hope she is a loose cannon—in the eyes of anyone who’s talking with Poppy Bush every day.

More evidence that she’s our candidate IMO.

Why should Ailes be any different? He is a GOP elitist. Christie and Jeb are right up his alley. Of course he is going to move away from the Tea Party. Its all one big club at the top and nobody wants to get edged out of the club. Is anybody really shocked?

We watch Fox with the same jaundiced eye we watch any other cable news channel. We get most of our news off the internet.

How did that turn the other cheek and not fight back work out for George W. Bush? Sarah Palin was accused of being complicit in murder and you're darn right she had a right to fight back. In fact, not only a right but a DUTY.

FNC will rue the day they ditched the ones that 'brung 'em' to the dance.

Will believe it when I see it...or hear it from his OWN mouth. Ailes isn’t stupid. He risks a heck of alot if ANY of this is even partially true.
