Appreciate the info... While I have long been interested in visiting the Tohoku region, I haven’t actually been there. I’ve visited Japan twice, but haven’t been there since 1998...

Family and friends all around Tokyo, so far so good. Skyping now with a friend stuck at work with no way home tonight.

They just had a long but moderate aftershock - in central Tokyo.

This cannot possibly be more important than Charlie Sheen.

Even an 8.9 can't knock Charlie outta the headlines. The local FOX news just now reporting that police searched Charlie's house and an antique gun was removed. Oh, no! Not an antique gun! Bet it was an antique automatic Glock AK-47!

Gizmodo keeps adding videos that Japanese people have taken during the quake.

Very interesting. And a great way to see inside Japanese homes. How well appointed and how skillfully the Japanese live in small quarters. I’m impressed.

I watched almost all of them.

Hurricane Katrina is a trending topic on Twitter. Here’s a tweet which contributed to making it trend. I kid you not.

@itsSTARbabyyy: Nobody gave a damn about hurricane katrina so I don’t give a damn about japan

Blah, too crowded for me. I don’t need a McMansion but at least give me enough room to wiggle my elbows and to shut a door.

I lived in Tohoku, 1977-79, my first encounter with Japan. Loved it and ended up coming back 1988-2002, which was divided between the Tokyo and Kobe areas.

I can even remember the characters of Kessennuma :

  1. Ke with the double consonant for steam.
  2. Sen for hermit (same as Sendai)
  3. Numa for swampy or marshy area.

It was about a 70 minute (local) train ride from Ichinoseki as I recall.

I find it incredible that in some of the office videos that there is an occasional employee calmly working while his coworkers are in a panic. Dedicated and focussed that’s for sure.

This is just a HINT of what’s coming, folks.

Things have hardly begun . . . yet.

Some believe more devastations will occur on 15 & 17 Mar . . . days away.
