Yeah - I was more of an O-chem guy. I’m assuming that Japanese facilities are generally going to be pretty sophisticated. But given the scale of event, not hard to see how systems get overwhelmed. I cannot imagine what the human cost is going to be. I had a student who was from Kobe - very difficult for her to even articulate the terror and despair.

I just gave up dish for economic reasons. The only station I am getting some coverage is mostly in Japanese with some english.
NHK world (never had heard of it prior). It is being streamed by a local Akron station
Glad you are safe! Prayers for the Japanese people. Have to admit I’m very happy my son and his family are back in the states after 3 years in Iwakuni. All their friends still there are safe as of now. All FReepers in Japan, stay safe!
Any place that has old buildings or building codes that are not geared to withstanding earthquakes, would be devastated.
It’s a Japanese “state.” There are 47 of them.
The aerial photos of the vast fires raging in Kessunuma (sp? Katsunuma?) in Miyagi Prefecture are unbelievable. Widespread fires throughout the devastation at night, with apparently no possible way to bring them under control...
Your extended family okay? Most of my wife’s family is in Kyushu or Hiroshima but my sister-in-law has two sisters in Kanto, one in southern Tokyo right next to Kawasaki and the other in Chiba. And this morning my wife was counting down friends here in the States who have family in Kanto also. Fortunately we can’t think of anyone from coastal Tohoku.
Looks like, amongst all the bad news, the Japanese have a lot to be proud of today.

It’s Kessunuma. I’ve been there. Nice city, friendly people. I hope they are OK. I lived through the big one in Kobe, 1995.
