Not loud enough to wake me up if I’d been sleeping, though.

You are 500' about sea level. If it's THAT bad, do you want to be awake?

Oops - right you are...

I knew what you meant. ;-)

I'm trying to remember my days working with tank farms and I don't know if Japan's codes are similar to the US or if there has been multiple systemic failures. I remember many tank installations had fire loops with onsite water tanks and back up generators with separate diesel ground storage tanks(don't remember the grade). They are saying (correct me if I'm wrong) that 4 million homes are without power in Tokyo. I'm wonder if both power and water have been cut to this facility and/or onsite systems are down. What a disaster.

I’m thinking you are ok in Petaluma. Just be ready to head inland if needed.

Gas up the car, pull out some cash, lock-n-load, etc.

OMG .. it’s been surreal to watch. Just breathtaking
devastation .. it could’ve been a horror movie .. but
it wasn’t. You’ll see the videos replayed over and
over and your jaw will drop.

All over the world, the incidents of earthquakes, tornadoes, natural disasters .. like the earth is in shuddering, angry spasms. God protect us all.

Interesting...

I was in the parking lot behind Exit-In, talking on a cell phone looking North at the low-level fast-moving clouds. Told the lady on the phone that it looked like a tornado was coming. She said - “funny you should mention that as they just announced a tornado warning for Davidson County on the radio”. This was pre-sirens in Nashville.

I looked to my left and what did I see? A giant, 1/2 mile wide, rotating, rain-filled monster. And it was coming through Centennial Park (for those who don’t know, it was less than 1/2 mile from me and closing quickly). Looked around for a place to go, then a lady opened the back door of her business, said “get in here”, and I ran for that door.

By the time I made it there, the storm was on me, the wind was very strong, and debris was hitting the side of the building all around me. Once we were inside, the front plate glass window imploded and debris swirled inside.

In just seconds it was over and I was able to go out the front of that building and watch the storm travel down Church Street until hitting the city directly.

I’d say the bulk of the storm was less than 10 seconds behind me as the plate glass blew out just as soon as we got the door closed and moved into the inner part of the building.

Was a fascinating experience, one I have retold many times ;)

Where were you?

The tsunami warning center is located in Ewa Beach at about 10 feet above sea level. Talk about government planning!

Brilliant!

I don’t know if this has been posted or not, but Al Jazeera has live news via YouTube. They are talking about a tsunami that is going to hit Indonesia within an hour to an hour and a half.

I just called a friend who lives in Seal Beach. They were still up working, but had not watched the news. Had no idea there were warnings out or that anything unusual was even going on.

Any reconstruction here will go 95% to JAPANESE construction firms. Believe me, it is not that easy to just come in, send workers here and build here. Plus, we too in Japan are in a recession with considerable unemployment. Any last possible job that comes out of this effort believe me, trust me, will go to a Japanese National first and foremost. Thanks for checking in.

It doesn’t sound good when the say the city was “destroyed”. I hope they just mean damagaged. The Japanese are WAY more advanced than most countries when it comes to building stuff for EQ. But a tsunami is more difficult to build for.

The Pacific coastal areas are MUCH better prepared for the tsunami warnings than the Indonesian/Thailand/India region - so hopefully deaths around the ocean will be few. The tsunami is what killed so many in the Sumatra quake. BUT, I imagine that there are many small villages on small islands that will have no warning.

Sad to think that here we can sit at our PC and monitor tidal gauges and ocean bouys to track the tsunami (if we wanted to), or at least monitor the news, while many of those that will be affected have no clue what is about to hit them. Prayers for everyone.

All of their nuclear plants are shut down, basic power and other supplies to a city of 4 million is going to be a big project, with another month or more of aftershocks ahead
