When you talk big, you'd better back it up. And if you back up the big talk, you deserve to celebrate even bigger. That wasn't a problem for the New York Jets during and after the team's decisive 28-21 victory over the New England Patriots in the AFC divisional playoff.
A bit of the celebration didn't please CBS announcer Jim Nantz, though. After Shonn Greene(notes) scored a late game-sealing touchdown, many Jets, Rex Ryan included, converged in the end zone to whoop it up and send one final message to the Patriots and their fans. Nantz didn't like this, particulary Greene's "nap time" celebration, which saw the running back fall to the ground and mimic that he was going to sleep.
"I've never understood the absurdity of all the self-aggrandizing and now you're going to cost your team 15 yards on the kick and you're going to give Brady and his unit a chance to do something."
All right, Jim. Come on down from that soapbox and let's talk about this. You're right that it's absurd for a player to cost his team 15 yards for an incident that was completely unnecessary. And you're right that Brady and his team were going to get another chance to do something. But did you have to go with "absurdity" and "self-aggrandizing" when ripping Greene's celebration? You know who's self-aggrandizing? People who use the phrase "self-aggrandizing." I assume you've been introduced to the pot and the kettle, Jim?

I was okay with their celebrating. That was a real fine win.
Have you noticed that all of the commercials that are on during an NFL game (with the exception of actor Sam Elliot doing the voice overs for Dodge Ram trucks) are incredibly annoying!
I mean......really, really annoying. The seem like they are written by hyperactive jerks with ADHD. The actors in them (that are supposed to play fun loving, hip, sarcastic wits) come across as the "guy no one wants to sit next to during the party."
And the Superbowl commercials - terrible. Sorry, but commercials about slapping people in the face, flatulence, and everything else that is gross is not amusing to watch.
The only commercials in the last few years that I found original were the ones by E-Trade.
You're right about the "wimp" rules too. And about Limbaugh being black balled.

What Would Lombardi Do?
His father Tony was my Civics teacher at Beebe Jr. High in Malden, MA. He was 92 feet tall. In the Class Will, the smallest kid in school would leave their long underwear to him.
Which head coach was it who used to say that players should act like they’d actually been in the end zone before?
Also, one of the jobs defensive players are hired to do is tackle the offensive play who has the ball. So, when they do that, they’re just doing their job.
Imagine an assembly line worker hooting and hollering and doing back flips every time they install another part on the line. Just doing their job.
These NFL players want to act up like adolescents but be paid and treated like professional men. Grow up, boys.
LOLOL.......all this serious talk about such nonsense.
The Jets are Jersey Shore come to the New Meadowlands.
Enjoy the show or turn off the TV.
That said, anyone who can’t enjoy the misery of the Patriots and Belichick is just plain scroogy.
sort of like what the Pats endured yesterday?
people quickly forgot how the Pats rubbed it in the Jets face during the Monday night loss and ran up the score....
too effin bad....
He fathered all those children all by hisself. No wimmen involved at all?????
I know the play you're talking about. His team's down 21 points and he does that folded arms "Ain't I cool?" pose.
Course, if the networks didn't do a close up of every one of the celebrations, they'd die out.
It was LaDanian Tomlinson (sp?) who mentioned God.
Yeah, it is the leftists that have destroyed the NFL.
Nanz is also an admitted Pats homer...
but hey- guess the illegal taping of opponents didn’t help belicheat this time around....
Re-read my post. My complaint was NOT about the Jets’ touchdown celebration.
Coach Ryan had been hurt in a fall and was barely able to navigate. He said nothing would keep him from the game.
enjoy watching the Jets in the playoffs.....again....
It’s why I don’t even watch football any longer. All BS self Aggrandizing that goes on by these hoodlums; I could care less. I wish they would put all the games on some cable channel where we don’t have to stay away from the TV on sundays. A good channel for it? How about, seeing where the league is today, BET and make it pay only so they take that BS channel off my regular cable lineup.
That’s a good celebration. I always believe in the Jerry Rice mantra “act like you’ve been there before and will be there again”. Really things have tamed down now, a few years ago it seemed like every play resulted in a celebration, defensemen would prance around like idiots for tackling a guy 5 yards past the down markers, WRs would spike the ball for routine catches short of the sticks. It really got bad. Things are pretty properly in proportion now, there’s still a crowd of prancers out there, but they usually save it for something legitimate, and they get it over with and get on with the game.
LT also carried out the jersey of Dennis Byrd at the start of the game- a former Jet and devout Christian and terrific football player unfortunately best known for the crunching hit which ended his career...
those “classless” Jets were given a pep talk from Byrd prior to the game which left many in tears...
