"If FR dies, that’s that." - Jim Robinson [Jim's reply at post # 588]

FYI -

Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.

===

"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Don’t have the financial wherewithal."

"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."

"If FR dies, that’s that."

===

[To: paulycy]

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.

It’s going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, there’s no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter. We’re on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.

Throwing more money at the problem won’t solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, we’re not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and he’s pushing 40 now. He built these systems and he’s an expert in them.

And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no we’re not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and that’s for sure. And we don’t have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.

All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get ‘er done!! I’ll bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.

Hit it boys:

https://secure.freerepublic.com/donate/

And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

FR should require a paid subscription to post any article.

Or, to post at all.

FWIW, I used to contribute but stopped when I felt unwelcome to post here because I was not willing to jump on Sarah Palin’s bandwagon. I have never been anti-Palin, I just want to take my time to explore the field before I make this kind of decision.

FR has the impact that it does because it's open. FR has impact. It would not if only a select few were here.

Great...I hope everyone who feels that way manages to find a few bucks every quarter when asked. And it wouldn't be a select few...it would be those who cared enough to pay to keep the servers working.

Wow....after 10 years, you'd think I'd know that.

That's...interesting.

I understand, and applaud you for it. I just wanted to get a technical issue on the table, since this seemed like a good place for it.

Oh yeah, Rush or Rush’s employees troll FR. Very obvious.

I understand but if FR goes down due to lack of funds, we’ll all have to explore elsewhere.

WOW, how much to YOU reap from your efforts?
Do your sites receive daily REPEATED ATTACKS from the malicious minions of the Left.
Do YOU have to monitor your site for trolls that wish to put Jim and FR in the position of being sued for Copyright infringement?
Have you been sued at least TWICE for the activities of posters?
Do you have an Attorney that works for FREE?
Obviously you have not been around long enough to know the TRUE costs of runnig this site.
I know that DailyKos et al have made it their mission to question the cost of running this site.
But, many that have been around from the beginning. 15 YEARS, 13years for me, know the history. I’m sure Jim has kept a lot of the problems private. But just those that are obvious don’t deserve to be dismissed so cavalierly.

The fundamental problem is that the company placing the ad would be firebombed by leftist zealots

I don't see how that would be possible. There would be thousands of companies involved, and different ones would show up for each user.

Besides, if they want to advertise, why not let them?

Find a way to limit non-donors like no FReepmail and no posting threads. Make them pay at least $10 a year.

just a thought

Here's a simple, pragmatic solution:

FReeloaders - banner ads
(ala Drudge)

Subscribers - no banner ads
(donation of any amount = 12 month FR membership)

This way everyone contributes - and FR lives on!

FReepers should support this site and make the libs pay to see what we’re writing about.

Another interesting idea. IMHO.

You have no idea how big FR is do you? Or how many hits and page loads it gets per day?

Its huge.

More than anything,I think it’s the economy. We have Freepers out of work. There are some that are in dire straights. Obama’s plan to kill America is working.

I live in a capitalist society. I have no problem with ads.

I’ll even patronize the advertisers.

Directly, yes, but not in any noticeable way in normal conditions; like, instead of 10 ms, it will take 15, or something. Where it can be relevant is under heavy load; with compression less bits travel through the wires, it can prevent congestion.

Why would Rove contribute to FR, after the way he has been treated here?
