First Chinese Carrier Nearly Complete
The Strategy Page ^ | 11/24/2010 | The Strategy Page

Work is picking up on what appears to be China's first aircraft carrier, the Shi Lang. For eight years now, China has been tinkering with a half finished Russian aircraft carrier. Two years ago, this ex-Russian aircraft carrier, Varyag, was renamed the Shi Lang (after the Chinese general who took possession of Taiwan in 1681, the first time China ever paid any attention to the island) and given the pennant number 83. Until last year, progress was slow. But there has been a lot of work lately. Early in 2009, China moved the Shi Lang into dry dock, where work is now obviously underway to install engines and other heavy equipment. A year ago, the radar mast was completed, and now there is a Chinese radar system being installed. Officially, the Chinese say nothing. But the dockyard workers keep at it, and it's possible to take photos from a distance. It appears that the Shi Lang is a year or so from going to sea.

Building a carrier is one thing. Sending a carrier battle group to any spot on the globe while replenishing it weekly with fuel, ordnance, spare parts and fresh provisions is a whole different ballgame --a ballgame the USN excels at.

Not saying the Chinese can't get there but they've got a long way to go.

My cruise down the Huang Po to the sea from Shanghai last year left me with a feeling that while commercial construction of merchant vessels was blooming, the Chinese navy was pretty third rate. Sounds like that's still the case.

Shi Lang = POS

The Soviets only have one.
They dumped the other on the chicoms and that was gutted first.
What we have here is a design from when Russia was struggling, Gutted and the hulk was sold to the Chicoms to figure out.

It doesnt even have steam catapults for crying out loud!
They use a ski ramp.

Whats under the hood?

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

seems to be true...
the Russian "Blue Navy" had the same problem, until they got oversea bases
and now...ChiComs have the Panama Canal, Long Beach, CA and soon many
more S. American ports.....and they can leverage (protect) their gains via their
control of the USA debt market.

In May 2005, the Varyag was placed in dry dock and, in early August, it emerged painted in People’s Liberation Army Navy gray.

OceanusAt that time Stanley Ho announced the construction oe f Oceanus, an $800 million entertainment complex in Macau, with 600 room hotel, casino, cinema, retail and apartments, scheduled to open in 2009. As one can imagine, this project was similar to that of Chong Lot Travel Agency. It seems Stanley Ho has lost thVaryag in transoceanic subterfuge and has decided to have non-floating one. However, Oceanus casino project was cancelled by Stanley Ho in 2008.
