That is terrible news, and there is supposed to be an air show this weekend.
Last crash some years ago was due to geese being ingested, I am north of Anchorage and these C17’s routinely fly over my house, they are weird sounding, quieter than the C130’s.

I love the low groan of large engines on cargo aircraft, especially the C-5. When I was in basic training, C-5’s were stationed at Kelly, next door. They used to fly over the drill pad blotting out the sky. This massive chunk of steel seemingly hanging in the air.

Best I know, this would be the first crash of a C17.
Some notable bad landings and a spectacular landing after taking a hit...
but no crashes to date.

I am reading the comments in the ADN website, eyewitnesses say that the plane was making a high bank low altitude turn possibly a maneuver for this weekends air show, unconfirmed that an access hatch was visibly open, may or may not have been for landing gear, developing...

Pretty impressive safety record considering the hours those babies are logging all over the world.

Prayers up for the crew.
My daughter/nurse is stationed at Elmendorf. Survivors...and I pray there are survivors...are in good hands.
