Editor's note: Following is an excerpt from the book "2010: Take Back America: A Battle Plan," which Harper will release on Tuesday.
Start with this: Arlen Specter has been a turncoat and a buffoon who has been in the United States Senate for far too long. For 30 years, he's always been a wild card, never reliably Republican in his voting pattern; in fact, he consistently disagreed with the party about 25 percent of the time. But even though he was always a maverick and frequently at odds with numerous Republican positions, Specter never gave any indication that he might bolt from the party and ally himself with the Obama administration.
That is, until 2009, when his poll numbers crashed and his chances of re-election looked impossible. Fearing that Republican voters would throw him out of the Senate in the 2010 election, Specter made a strategic decision to renounce the Republicans and switch to the Democratic Party to try and stay in the Senate.
His move gave the Democrats the critical 60th member they needed to block Republican filibusters until Scott Brown won the Senate seat in Massachusetts. But at the time he joined them, giving the Democrats their 60th vote was a very big deal: It marked the first time that either party has had 60 votes in the Senate since 1978.
Specter's formal announcement of his resignation from the Republican Party gave new meaning to the word obnoxious.(continued)

LOL true
...but you can’t say you never done dumb things!
sorry hope wrong ping
Or, in the case of the Republican Party, let he without stones cast the first sins!
I wish when it is time to check out that some of these guys would give a death bed confession...
Sphincter... BUFFOON...good one!
Give me the d@mn rock.
Long standing protocols, like them or not, that the sitting president does not campaign against an incumbent.
The party ordinarily does not endorse any candidate until after the primary.
Dose are da rules........
The only thing Specter was right about was the first shot which hit Kennedy.
I was at a talk given by a very high level female GOP operative. Very well known and well respected within the party. She said she was in a plane with Specter and the heat wasn’t working...and he didn’t offer them water or anything...she said he was always rude and she was there, outside his office, the day he flipped.
She had a long held appt. with him to meet some young Republicans. She said she’ll never forget that feeling and it will never happen again. That’s how I know this Republican party today is different....because the people on the ground (and I’m not talking about the RNC), and they are mostly women, are not going to just support the party people and that’s why I’m happy to be working inside the GOP today.
Specter is the author of the single bullet theory — a dubious theory, at best.
The Stupid Party RNC is trying to save McCain AND endorsed RINO Crist before the primary.
(has anyone even SEEN Rinon Crist? it is easier to find waldo)
O don’t even tell me! I don’t wanna know I did a wrong ping! Don’t ruin it for me!
LOL! I’m there..God won’t Ya help me!
Please. Only a fool would have been surprised about that.
That’s very true, Bush and Rove ticked off a lot of people, myself included, when they did that. And for that fact alone I’m still wary of Karl Rove. I don’t trust him, he reminds me too much of James Baker.
LOL
Not you me!
Yup! Specter is really despicable. What gets me is that he is eighty years old. He must be financially secure. Why would he ruin his already shakey reputaion by pulling a sleazy stunt like becoming a Democrat in the administration of a community organizer? Now he goes down in history as a low life and an unprincipled turncoat. Talk about hubris.
