There were several Dixie State College students doing just what he suggested at the event.
Robert Sinnott, a senior English major from Woodbridge, Va., is the co-chair of the DSC chapter of the College Republicans. He said the College Republicans were there to help set up the stage and other equipment, and to support the Tea Party cause. He said this cause is rooted in limited government, fiscal responsibility and stopping runaway spending.
"It lets people know that we are involved and we care about the cause," he said.
Attendees also included Congressional candidate Neil Walter and Senate candidates Mike Lee and Tim Bridgewater.
Walter said he came to the event to support the Tea Party because it cares about local people.
"They feel like somebody in this country is paying attention to the issues that are important to them," he said. "At the national level things that are important to people in southern Utah get ignored a lot."
Bridgewater said he was there to earn support for his Senate campaign. He said the Tea Party is igniting across the country, and it's time for Americans to stand up and work to defend liberty and freedoms.
"If we don't they will be taken away by government bureaucrats," he said.
Lee said the movement is revolutionizing America, and he supports attempts to return the U.S. to its constitutional fundamentals. He said we have ignored the Constitution for more than 75 years, and he can't stand by and let that happen.
Various local political groups like the Citizen Council on Illegal Immigration, the Dixie Republican Forum, The 9-12 Coalition of Southern Utah, and the American Legion showed up to lend their support.
American Legion Commander Wilford Stay is a retired Air Force major. He said the American Legion is not a political group, but he and other veterans were at the event to lend support to the Constitution.
The event included a tribute to U.S. troops, and a member of the American Legion played "Taps" while other members presented the colors.
Stay said he is always honored by such tributes, but also feels like he hardly deserves it since so many others have sacrificed more than him.
The sacrifices of American soldiers was a prominent theme, and this was exemplified by a speech by Debbie Lee, who is the mother of the first Navy SEAL to be killed in the Iraq war. She shared the story of Marc Alan Lee with the crowd, praising the bravery of her son, who she said willingly gave his life in Iraq.
"He didn't just do that to defend his buddies," she told the crowd. "He did that for you and me, for this nation that he so loved."
According to "Tea Party Express Comes to Utah," a press release by Levi Russel, the Tea Party Express is on its third tour of the nation. This tour started in Searchlight, Nev., and will hold 44 party rallies across the nation. The tour will end in Washington, D.C., on tax day, April 15. Hubby and I were at the Salt Lake City Tea Party. Over 1000 people were there, despite a blasting wind and dust storm. Loved it!
