OAKLAND — A You Tube video showing a fight between two AC Transit bus riders has ignited a flurry of online debates about violence, race and the safety of public transit.
The video, which shows an older white man exchanging blows with a younger black man, is attracting hundreds of thousands of hits.
The fight took place Tuesday afternoon on a bus in downtown Oakland, near the corner of Harrison and Webster streets.

I get tired of catching lip from punks like this myself, and though I've never had to go "hands on" with one. My latest incident occurred at a local fast food restaurant at about 8:30p.m. on a Sunday night. I had placed an order, and was standing back waiting for it to be completed. Four thugs enter the almost completely empty restaurant... One immediately heads straight for the restroom, two others stood by each of the entry doors, and the other went straight to the counter. I could tell by the look on the face of the employee that she was now scared to death by the way these guys were moving. She reached back, retrieved my order and set it on the counter in the bag, ready to go. The punk at the counter pulled the bag toward himself, and she made a slight reach for it (without saying a word) but evidently saw something in his face and stopped short of touching the bag. I just carefully unbuttoned my suit coat and reached around him quickly, keeping my right hand clear and my carry weapon on the opposite side of him. He looked very surprised, and turned and looked at the guy standing next to the door. Holding the bag in my left hand, I just turned and looked at him, with my right hand now resting on my belt, coat slightly pulled back, just forward of my still concealed Glock 22. Door thug says "We ain't gonna steal yo' food... boy." By this time I was about 3 feet away from him... I stopped, leaned in slightly toward him and said very quietly and slowly "I don't think I would let that happen, even if you thought you could do it..." The look on his face was one of complete shock. He couldn't believe what I had said, and wasn't quite sure what to do. His eyes went down to my right hand, which was now fully grasping an as yet unholstered Glock. I waited for him to look back up at me, but he just let his eyes drop to the floor... At that point, I said "That's what I thought..." He quickly jerked his head toward the door and he, bathroom thug, counter thug, along with door thug #2 left the restaurant. They had parked in a adjacent restaurant's parking lot... I watched them as I walked to my truck, and just leaned against it watching them until they left.
Now, some would question the wisdom of what I did in this incident... But to be completely honest, I was just too tired and too upset (I had on the suit because I had just left the funeral visitation for a friend) to put up with that crap. I don't fancy myself a "man with no name" vigilante, nor as an architect with my own sense of justice. Sometimes you just have to say "Not this time!"
I do wish that I could have gotten it all on video, though. Under most other circumstances, I could have never come up with the cold words that I calmly said to that punk. The next time I went in to that little restaurant, the same girl was at the counter... She called everybody up to the counter from back in the kitchen and said "Guys! Guys! This is the man I was telling you about!" (I didn't say a word, but I was truly smiling on the inside...)

That's just the way I would have handled it, too.
Meanwhile, the Nazis invaded their neighbors. They slaughtered many and enslaved even more in their government factories. Their goal was world domination. Their friends, the Japanese, attacked America on our own soil.
I'd say American lives were lost before any American Soldier set foot in any of the WWII Theaters of War during WWII when American sailors died in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Yes. Everyone, including old white guys with beards, has the right to self defense. This bearded guy exercised his, and rightfully so. If someone hits you in the face, what are you going to do?
I know what I'd do - I'd do exactly what this guy did - I'd stand up and beat the crap out of the thug. We need more of this, not less.

No. We did what we needed to and should have done in opposing Hitler. That said, it was a far stretch when the poster Balding_Eagle was trying to compare the violence brought on by Hitler and WWII to this incident on the bus.

I'm not sure what your problem is, but I bet it's awfully hard to pronounce and a pharmaceutical company makes a treatment for it!
At one moment you claim when violence occurs, everyone loses. Then you say you defend yourself when necessary. For the sake of the rest of us, decide which reality you reside in and stick with it for each thread!

Since clarity is paramount, 1) show where I said that violence is never justified. 2) “you implied that the loss of American lives in WWII was meaningless. That is YOUR interpretation of my statement. My simple point is that whenever people resort to violence, be it in a war or on a bus, nobody wins and both parties lose. This is a philosophical point which some may find difficult to grasp. In such cases, it becomes easier for some to resort to name calling and threats to family members. Know what I mean?

One of the most distrubing parts of this video is the raw racial hatred of the black passengers, and their use of derogatory racial epithets.
I know if I had been a passenger on this bus I would not have started hurling N-bombs at the instigator. I don’t use that kind of language even alone with close friends, and would never consider using it on a public bus.

‘Pinky’ is short for Pink MF, one of the most current anti-white racial put downs, for those not up on their ebonics.
Then, seemingly another black woman’s voice:”
“Beat his white ass! Whoop his ass!”
This video would be on CNN every 13 minutes if it contained audio of a several white passengers saying “Say it. Say it again Darkie” “Beat him. Beat his black ass..”
So, even in the public reaction to it, there is a double standard. Whites expect and accept that they will be taunted with racial epethets, but are trained into sucking it up and ignoring it. You don’t want to start an incident.
We are not to look up, not to notice the mumbled rude comments, to quietly move away from the people like this.
Even the act of video taping him is provocative and rude. What reaction would a white person get sitting in the back of a bus video-taping black people? It would not go unremarked, it would not be permitted likely by the blacks.
Strangely the biggest thing going for the white guy is that it *was* videotaped.
Does anyone seriously doubt that, in the abscence of the tape the same people yelling “beat his white ass” would have been swearing out statements insisting the white guy threw the first punch, the white guy used the “N” word, etc.
Even so, I have heard that Epic Bearded Man was arrested.

Taken as a whole it seems to demonstrate to me that we have actually REVERSED Jim Crow. It is whites who must bow to the superiority of blacks on public transportation, and ride only in the assigned seats. It is whites who must put up with being called names, and dare not look the taunting people in the face, for fear of a beating.
