A growing number of countries, including some of the most progressive in Europe, are rejecting the U.S. “gender-affirming” model of care for transgender-identified youth. These countries have adopted a far more restrictive and cautious approach, one that prioritizes psychotherapy and reserves hormonal interventions for extreme cases. In stark contrast to groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which urges clinicians to “affirm” their patient’s identity irrespective of circumstance and regards alternatives to an affirm-early/affirm-only approach “conversion therapy,” European health authorities are recommending exploratory therapy to discern why teens are rejecting their bodies and whether less invasive treatments may help....

On February 16, 2010, two guys got in a fight on a bus in Oakland. Another passenger caught it on video. Results: One bloody nose, and instant internet history. The video, shown after the break, is officially titled AC TRANSIT BUS FIGHT I AM A MOTHERF***ER (named for the words on the fight winner's shirt), but the meme has also spread under the names "Amber Lamps" (for the loser's slurred request for an amulance) and "Epic Beard Man" (out of support for the winner). OAKLAND (KRON) – A spokesperson for AC Transit tells KRON 4 their bus driver did exactly what she was supposed to do when a fight broke out on a bus in Oakland Monday afternoon. The fight between two passengers took place on the N-bus line on 20th Street between Webster and Franklin.

Another verbal fight that turned violent was posted on YouTube Tuesday. A man who announces himself as a 67 year old gets into it with a fellow much younger passenger. It started as an argument that seemed to be a simple misunderstanding over a comment made while taking a seat. The two separated with one moving to the front of the bus for a time. But that time out did not last long. More words are exchanged. Then the younger man walks up front for some more yelling followed by fists flying. Note: the older gentlemen is wearing a light...

OAKLAND — A You Tube video showing a fight between two AC Transit bus riders has ignited a flurry of online debates about violence, race and the safety of public transit. The video, which shows an older white man exchanging blows with a younger black man, is attracting hundreds of thousands of hits. The fight took place Tuesday afternoon on a bus in downtown Oakland, near the corner of Harrison and Webster streets. We will update this story when further details are available.

The House health-care reform bill proposes to decrease hospital visits by establishing a “medical home pilot program” for elderly and disabled Americans. Such a medical home would not require a physician to be on the staff, and therefore could be run solely by nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Medical homes also would practice “evidence-based” medicine, which advocates only the use of medical treatments that are supported by effectiveness research. But physicians’ groups say the legislation could lead to restrictions on which treatments may be used for certain conditions, despite the fact that some patients might require a unique or unconventional...
