Not something that would make national headlines, but did not miss a stunned audience, President Barack Obama became the first American president in 118 years to abstain from the same long tradition of addressing the Daughters Of the American Revolution (DAR) Continental Congress, named after the governing body of the American Colonies during the American Revolution.

Presidential greetings were in fact first initiated during the year 1910, 100 years ago not 118 years ago.

OK so he is the first President in a 100 years to not send a rep or show up. DAR is a conservative org so they don't count I suppose. My understanding based on inside information is that at the opening they allowed 3 minutes for the WH rep to show up for the keynote address. 3 minutes of silence was allowed and then they went ahead and skipped the traditional keynote address. Incredible.

Best I can tell Ann Dunham would have been eligible for Colonial Dames (both societies operating under that name), and it'd been a cakewalk for her to get into the DAR.

With a little bit of work I think there's a case that whole crowd would be eligible for membership in the Oneida Indian tribe (and I may well pursue my own application for that ~ btw, all that information is "secret" so I'm not going to upset the applecart by revealing all that I know.)

Obama's grandmother had one of the most illustrious genealogies anyone in America could have. It's all on the internet back to the Revolution, and in parts earlier. I have much of the information regarding individuals named in the earliest parts of that genealogy and can take a good deal of it back to Scandinavia and France (which is the part in which I've been specializing).

Most people in the United States have pre-Revolutionary Colonial ancestors, but may not know it. Just off the top of the head, I’ve got at least five different family lines that go back that far, and at least four out of five of them served to overthrow British monarchic rule.

Of course, everyone has ancestors as old as everyone else’s, but that’s a different discussion... ;’)

The Berlin wall was definitely on his radar screen. He intentionally dissed the event. To understand why, one need look no further that who uttered the words "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

Republican strategists should be keeping a list of all of the events and people he dissed and those he honored with his presence. It could make for excellent campaign ads in 2012.

Yep, everybody's ancestors are OLD, but not everybody's old ancestors were in America in pre-Revolutionary times.

I've read that if you have ancestors that were here previous to 1690, then, due to the entire population of people being so small, that you are related to every other American currently alive who also can trace their ancestry back to a person living in America previous to 1690 - and I believe that I read that Barack Obama's American ancestry DOES go back there, and so although he may not be interested -- but some day his daughters might be interested in this. And all of them would be be related to many millions of Americans, who simultaneous are all related to oneanother through those very early ancestral connections.

Perhaps I did not express that well. Things that have deep meaning to most Americans do not have deep meaning to him. So, yes, he intentionally snubbed the celebrations because to him, THE FACT THAT WE WON THE COLD WAR, that all those people were freed, is unimportant, unworthy of his time. He would prefer they were still living under the communist boot, and he thinks this would be a better place if we did. It is as if he is from a different country, and has no love of ours, nor any appreciation for its achievements. Also, he would rather have his tongue ripped out than credit Reagan or any of the other Cold Warriors with their achievements. What a petty bastard, in the true sense of the word. I recall hearing Peter Robinson of Reagan's staff (speechwriter?
assistant?) tell how Dept. of State reviewers told Reagan
he couldn't say that.
And that when Reagan resubmitted it back to Dept. of State,
he had left it in the draft.

I'm pretty sure it was Dept. of State weinies that were trying

I didn't realize there were two distinct Colonial Dames organizations; however, insofar and Ann Dunham and her son and her granddaughters Malia and Sasha - they'd all be eligible for membership, right? -- I was certain I'd read something like that on a geneology website. I've also read, I think here at FR, that almost anyone who has any 18th century Southern ancestors, either white or black, that the chances are like 98% that you also have a Native American ancestor, most are Cherokee, but there's lot of other southeastern tribes, too.

Your French connections, are they Huguenot? Don't you (also) have ties to New Sweden, or is that another freeper?

Eleanor Roosevelt quit the DAR, right? Because they refused to allow Mahalia Jackson to perform, was that the correct incident?

That is absolutely fascinating about the Oneida ancestry, that sounds extremely complex!

Sorry — your timeline is off. The DAR Congress was last summer. In fact, this article dates back to July 2009. But I get your point :)
