Hands Off Honduras
Commentary Magazine ^ | 9/28/2009 | Michael J. Totten

Posted on 10/01/2009 12:34:53 AM PDT by ErnstStavroBlofeld

The United States government, along with the rest of the Western Hemisphere’s governments, is so worked up about returning ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya to power that it hasn’t thought through the long- or even medium-term consequences of its threats and demands.

Millions of dollars in aid to Honduras–one of the poorest countries in Latin America–was cut off after Zelaya was arrested by the military and sent into exile in June. The U.S. is not only threatening to cut off hundreds of millions more, it’s threatening to impose sanctions and not recognize the results of the November election if he isn’t first allowed back in office. These threats, if carried out, will put both Honduras and the U.S. in impossible positions.

Sanctions are supposed to be temporary. Targeted countries are always told what they can do to restore the status quo ante. Iran, for instance, can dismantle its nuclear-weapons program. Syria can cease and desist its support for Hamas and Hezbollah. Saddam Hussein, while he still ruled Iraq, had the option of admitting weapons inspectors.

Honduras, though, will have no way out if the interim government doesn’t return Zelaya to power before his term ends in January. Because the Honduran constitution prohibits him and every other president from serving more than one term, it won’t be legally possible for Honduras to do what’s demanded of it after the end of this year. Unlike Iraq, Iran, and Syria, it will be isolated and trapped under sanctions indefinitely.

Notice which side the Obama crowd has very publicly taken concerning Honduras, it’s the same side the Russians, Castro, Hugo, Ortega and the rest of the communist totalitarian world.

The way Obama and his administration have handled the instances of citizens taking on their government seeking more freedom and/or less repression tells me all I need to know about this man and the people with whom he surrounds himself.

His actions have been directly the opposite of America's role in freedom and self-determination for the peoples of the world espoused by John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, to name just two.

How terribly sad that we have a President who is ashamed of the country that elected him, and has no intention whatsoever of backing those around the world who would rise to throw off the mantle of repression by the very governments Obama seems to embrace.

I have no doubt this period in American history will be one that we live to regret and recount with shame.

It's not legally possible for Honduras to do what's demanded of it RIGHT NOW. Zelaya removed himself from office by seeking a second term. The only way he returns to office is if the Honduran Constitution is ignored just as thoroughly as it would be if he was given a second term.

Yes, he removed himself>

Honduran Constitution-

“Article 239 specifically states that any president who so much as proposes the permissibility of reelection “shall cease forthwith” in his duties, and Article 4 provides that any “infraction” of the succession rules constitutes treason. The rules are so tight because these are terribly serious issues for Honduras, which lived under decades of military rule.”

The only reason why he is getting crazy is because he is stuck in the compound which is about to be raided any day now.

I agree with that. The U.S. government should be proud of aiding and abetting a fugitive and a known cocaine dealer and importer
