Conversion Would Make Per-Gallon Gasoline Tax To Tax On Wholesale Price Of Gas
Noting that state roads are "the pits," Gov. Jennifer Granholm says she supports changing the state gasoline tax to raise more money as gas prices rise.
Granholm told reporters Wednesday that the state's current 19-cent-per-gallon tax doesn't raise enough money to repair Michigan's aging roads.
The Transportation Funding Task Force she appointed last year has suggested converting the per-gallon gasoline tax to a tax on the wholesale price of gas and raising vehicle registration fees. Granholm says she supports both.

She said last year she wouldn't raise taxes this year. This is tax increase number 2 and it's March 4th.
An emergency unemployment program has kicked in, in addition to the Federal extensions by both Bush & Obama. But of course we need to raise taxes on both cigarettes and gas right now.

The original headine seems deliberately obfuscatory. “Changing” is longer than “raising.” And her “change” clearly would “raise” it.

Good idea. Lets screw the poor even more by making it difficult to get to their worker jobs or applying at jobs in states that have lower taxes.
I thought conservatives were supposed to be responsible form the oppresion of the poor. Oh yeahhhh... Meanwhile liberals are hiking our expenses and craping all over the poor with taxes and with higher living costs. All thanks to socialism and president Obamination.

Same old crap with her. Raise taxes on everyone indirectly. Raise diesel fuel tax so the price of goods goes up along with the cost of transporting it. Raise wholesale gas tax so gas stations raise the price to make up for it.

Michigan is beautiful.
Went there to visit Macinaw Island.
With its tax structure there is no way I’d ever move there.

As gas reached over $4/gallon, I did an interesting calculation based on the cost of a gallon of gas and my vehicle miles per gallon. Divide the price of gas by the miles per gallon achieved by your vehicle. That gives you miles per dollar. Let's assume you want to drive 60 miles at a posted speed of 60 MPH. That's one hour. Divide that 60 miles by your miles per dollar. That's how much you have to earn hourly to drive that vehicle. My son has an old vehicle that gets about 13.5 MPG. At the peak price of $4.09/gallon he needs to earn $18.17/hour. Too bad. He earns minimum wage of $6.55. Oops. His break even cost happens at $1.47/gallon in that vehicle. Above the price, his vehicle can only be operated intermittently. Long trips are not financially feasible. He's burning fuel money faster than he's earning it.

Maybe they should investigate what happened to the gas tax money. where did it go if it didn’t go to the roads? All states should start investigations, especially those run by democraps.

If the changes take effect, motorists would pay more in taxes as the price of gas goes up, but less if the price drops.Very misleading statement.
The current tax is 19 cents per gallon. The new tax is 18 percent at wholesale. At two dollars a gallon, the old tax is 19 cents. At two dollars per gallon, the wholesale prices is about $1.40 per gallon, so the new tax would be about 26 cents per gallon.
The wholesale price of gas would have to go down to about 80 cents before the tax actually declined. Wat the article fails to discuss is what happens if the wholesale price increases. Say, for example a wholesale price of 2.50 per gallon. The tax would then be 45 cents per gallon are about an increase of 150 percent.
Also, not mentioned is the new tax includes doubling the fees for registering your vehicle. If you are currently pay $150.00 the new fee will be $300.00.
This new tax represents a huge increase in taxes on Michigan residents. The average driver will pay about $400.00 more per year.A person earning $20,000 per year will see about 8% of their take home pay used to pay the new taxes.

Oh. I forgot one more thing. Since the new tax is on the wholesale price, Michigan gets to charge its 6 percent sales tax on the 18 percent gas tax.
Granholm surely must think this is a win - win situation.
