Prediction: Drive-Bys Will Start Saying Economy is Getting Better
January 9, 2009

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: Now, Snerdley has asked a good question. Rare, but good question. When it doesn't work, aren't the American people going to blame the guy in charge? Well, who's that going to be? Obama? I am surprised at this question. I'm surprised that you would ask this question. Do you think the American people are going to blame Obama?
Let me tell you what's going to happen. Mark this date down, January 9th, 2009. Within a week -- 'cause it's already actually started -- within a week of the Immaculate Inauguration, we're going to start seeing stories that will feature those man-on-the-street interviews with people whose lives are starting to get a little bit better and they see the light at the end of the tunnel now. They go on more job interviews and they are doing a little bit better. The Drive-Bys will start setting the stage to create the impression in the minds of people that we're coming back, when we're not. Just as they try to set up this mood that we're going to hell in a handbasket when we're not, notice how that works. That convinces people, the old sawbuck, "Well, I'm doing fine, but I'm hearing on the news my neighbor is about to lose his job, we're in trouble here." So how does it play when you're outta work, but you hear that other people are getting jobs? If you are an Obama voter, you think your time is just around the corner, you gotta be patient because he's already working, his plan is already working.
Snerdley, why would people who voted for Obama on the basis of vibes, good feelings, and all this meaninglessness, all of a sudden turn substantive? No, no, no, no, no, no, no. They're not going to lose their homes. There was a piece of legislation being debated now to keep 'em in there. They're not going to lose their homes. The only people that are going to lose their homes are people that can afford to pay for it, but for some reason don't. There will be people out of work, but there will be hope, because there's change. And this attitude of hope will sustain people through the bad times 'cause Obama is there. You've gotta understand how the media is going to portray this, and then to the extent that that doesn't work on everybody, there's always, "It was much worse than we knew because of Bush." Remember, Bush is going to be a whipping boy. I would love to say that you're right, that the American people, not going to take 'em too long to figure out that this is bogus, this guy sold them a bill of goods, that their economic situation is in the toilet, somebody's about to hit the flusher, and they're gonna want change and so forth again, but it took four years for that to materialize with Jimmy Carter, and Jimmy Carter ain't no Barack Obama in terms of being able to hypnotize people while he speaks.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: Perhaps if there are people in the audience... Those of you out there who happen to agree with Snerdley and disagree with me, who believe that the American people will not put up with economic failure for very long and will get mad at Obama, may I remind you of the reputation Franklin Delano Roosevelt has to this day among people who voted for him? Franklin Delano Roosevelt did an Obama and prolonged the Great Depression by seven years. He won two terms and nearly got away with packing the Supreme Court. The war came along, but there were seven years, there were seven years of abject misery before the war came along during the Great Depression, when the New Deal was put into place. As my buddy Steve Gilbert reminds me, people were singing songs of joy back then. "We're in the money now. We're in the money now," and unemployment was at 25%.
It was much higher than what we have today. And if you think, if you think a demagogic, flowery-spoken candidate or president with an accomplice media can't convince people things are great when they're bad, you've got another think coming. If they can convince 'em things are horrible when they're good, the opposite's also possible. To this day people who were alive and voted for Roosevelt think he's the greatest president we ever had, and not because of World War II. It's because of Social Security, because of Medicaid, because of the New Deal. So don't doubt me. Don't think the American people that voted for this guy are going to turn on him in two years. I'm sorry to be depressing, but it's realistic. It gives you an idea. There's good in everything that happens. This is a profound opportunity we have here. It will all unfold as we lead our way back to prominence here.
- We saw the same thing during the election process.....people cried...people smiled, ..People really began to have Positive vibes...
- We are looking a a Special Guy...he is not God per se....but ...he is Special....
- Obama was born with a considerable number of gifts and abilities. What marks him as special is his willingness to use his talents and abilities to better the plight of his fellow man.
- I'm thinking second coming...or maybe not.
- I know I bow down and pray to his image every night. I hope every one here is doing the same.
Oh, yeah. Hussein is gonna get good press...

Rush gets to go back to history class. FDR won three terms as President.
I get to go back to history class also — FDR won four terms.
(hangs head in shame)
the irony of it will be that the drive-bys will say this as the publications for which many of them write bite the dust.
They’ll have to crowd into fewer and fewer outlets.
The urinals will be crowded as they jockey for position.
That was funny.
Those who do not remember history are destined to be corrected!
I guess that ruins your “I’m smarter than everyone else here” shtick for awhile.
Anyone could have seen this coming - I’m betting that the week after the Omagasm in Washington the Economy will suddenly look brighter to the MSM.....amazing.....
I think the media will cover for Obama big time. But let’s not get too worried here. Roosevelt was middle of the road compared to Obama. Roosevelt beat Hoover by almost 18% in the popular vote. He also got close to 90% of the electoral vote. In comparison, Obama only beat McCain by 7%, and won just over 66% of the electoral vote.
On the contrary, I corrected myself before anyone else had the chance. Which proves that I’m not only smarter than everyone else, but also smarter than myself.
lol
the prObama media? nevuh! the mother-in-law is moving in, who wears the pants?
Did you literally hang your head in shame, or were you just Obamanizing us? (We want to see an actual photograph of YOU hanging your head in shame.)
If McCain had challenged Obama's "eight years of the Bush economy" with "two years of the Pelosi economy", he may have flipped enough of that 7% to win the election.
In all truthfulness, I was a little mad at myself. I knew it was four and not three. The fourth term always throws me because of the whole dying in office thing. In my mind Roosevelt’s fourth term is actually Truman’s.
That would be the obvious conclusion.
Other bloggers have observed that many of the high poobahs of Climate Change are now backing away from their previous holy doctrine. Presumably in the hopes that the One will not be pressed to sign a Kyoto II. Now that GWB is no longer available to be clubbed with Global Warming, it has now served it’s purpose.
The only think that makes our "money" worth anything is faith.
Faith in the Fed, faith in America, faith in the manufacturing and service sectors ... pure faith.
That piece of paper you have in your pocket is worth ... a piece of paper.
When you go into a bank, people are quiet, even whispering .... why?
God is locked up in the tabernacle. (upper case 'g' merely because it started a sentence)
So all anyone has to do is be a good enough preacher of 'the faith', and people's thoughts are directed accordingly.
You were wrong but you are now right. As kids we use to run around saying “LSMFT” and it was’nt “Lucky Strike means fine tobacco”, it was “ lets start mentioning fifth term” LOL Just thought I would throw that in there.
Perception is Reality . This is how the Rats have managed to brainwash over half of the country.
He won two terms and nearly got away with packing the Supreme Court. The war came along, but there were seven years, there were seven years of abject misery before the war came along during the Great Depression, when the New Deal was put into place.
He was elected twice, then came the war.....He just didn't mention the two subsequent elections. Which led to the constitutional amendment limiting Presidents to two elected terms. Truman could have ran again, but chose not to.
Not much of a prediction from ElRushbo ... I think my 3 year old could predict this...
Nope, first there will have to be acknowledgement that the Mess-iah is inheriting the worst situation since FDR and/or Abe Lincoln. He will have to be photographed walking hunch backed on the Portico like JFK, and there will be “an address from the Oval Office” that will have those of us strong enough to stomach it in stitches for days. Then, around Lincoln’s Birthday and leading into Valentine’s Day, the economy will magically start to improve.
After losing $29 BILLION last year, my bank just got bought out by Wells Fargo. I think most of the teller's mumblings are prayers.
Shoot. I didn’t know either and Rush must not have. No one can remember everything, not even Rush - and where FDR is concerned, I think he doesn’t really give a rip.
Roosevelt and Johnson, the two most socialist Presidents ever but 0bama will put them both to shame.
One thing about the Bushes is that they have terrible timing. With the possible exception of Jeb, who seems to have timed everything perfectly.
There is a clear signal the MSM gives when they’re going to start downplaying a story...and that is when they trot out the next catastrophic prediction. It appears that the new one is going to be the prediction of a solar storm that’ll knock out our electronic infrastructure by 2012.
As kids we use to run around saying LSMFT and it wasnt Lucky Strike means fine tobacco, it was lets start mentioning fifth term LOL
He was talking about in terms of elections solely concerning the Depression. The two that came afterwards had other things on people’s minds, such as WWII.
Not sure I agree. These guys both handled tough wars pretty well, and stood up strong for us.
Both squandered huge popularity leads with either terrible indecision (Bush the Elder) or flat out inability to tell Americans what was happening with the economy and who dun it..
Both failings really were in the inability to communicate effectively on the economy. Neither caused the economic problems.
I deal with hiring managers and financial officers of firms of all sizes, including 2 of the 15 largest firms in the US, on a daily basis. Based on those conversations I will tell you it’s going to be very hard for the media to spin things in a positive light for a while. The people with access to the performance data on their firms are not at all positive right now.
Pundit on “Fast Money” last night observed that we are in “late stage bear market” and that eg dryfreight rates are alread beginning to rise. Shipping stocks are rising.”
The low in stocks was put in back in November. that has nothing to do with obama, it has to do with the fact that we had a market panic of proportions only seen once every 20 years or so. they always bounce back at some point.
The real crying shame with Obama is that, like FDR, he will get ‘credit’ for helping things but it will only be by luck of timing, not because his programs work. Actually his plans will make things worse.
See this analysis:

Consider 2 alternatives:
1. Suppose we fail to do the stimulus at all, through an amazing feat of political incompentence, gridlock, etc. The economy recovers in late 2009 and grows in 2010. Unemployment peaks at 8% in June 2009, then falls to 6% by end of 2010.
2. Suppose we do the stimulus as planned, most spending doesnt really hit until late 2009 to 2010. The economy recovers in late 2009 and grows in 2010. Unemployment peaks at 8% in June 2009, then falls to 6% by end of 2010.
EVEN IF THE ECONOMIC RESULT WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS IF NOTHING GOOD WAS DONE, SOME ‘CREDIT’ WILL BE TAKEN BY THE POLITICIANS FOR THE RECOVERY. This ‘stimulus’ is not about improving the economy but more about politicians showing themselves to be useful enough to deserve re-election.
Consider it Obama’s lucky timing. Even a mediocre record will look good, since he inherits an economy at its low point.
Prediction: The economy will ‘magically’ improve in the media’s eye the week after the stupid, boneheaded, bassackwards socialize-the-economy big-govt-spending-our-childrens-inheritance plan is passed and signed.
THE ECONOMIC FEARMONGERING IS ALL ABOUT GETTING THE LIBERAL AGENDA ACCOMPLISHED. ONCE THE AGENDA IS ACCOMPLISHED, THEY CAN START TOUTING THE ECONOMY AS “PROOF” IT “WORKED”.
They will never admit that the Great Depression analogies were baloney to start with, but one by one the over-the-top comparisons will fall away.
Barney Frank wants quick action because he is willing to bet the economy shows signs of recovery in late summer/early fall. He wants to make the appearance of doing something, then take credit for the natural healing of the economy.
Stupid string. That was a funny exchange
Smarter than everyone else?
Which one contains the iocane?
Choose!
Rush is only one year younger than I am and I can assure you that he knows very well that Roosevelt was elected to four terms, but died early in his fourth term. When we were in school, every student had to take US history and it was REAL history and not liberal propaganda. If I, who am no student of history, knew that, I am willing to bet that Rush did, too, and he was talking about how Roosevelt was elected to two terms without his doing much of anything to improve the economy. It was the War that bailed him out and allowed him to win the other two elections.
Just when I said "no way that comment is for real", apparently it is...I'm at a loss for words.
LOL!
Inconceivable!
I always understood it to be ‘loose straps mean floppy **ts’.
But I was raised by sailors.
Oh well then... To the Pain!
