Study Reveals Simple "Search" Could Reduce Traffic on FreeRepublic by 38% (vanity)

I have been very good about this lately too. When you go to post a story use the "Search" button and put one of the key words from the stories title in the textobx and select "Titles" in the dropdown and then do the "Search". Odds are it's been posted cause' folks are quick around here. Lately, the same story is posted 4 to 6 times right out of the box with conversations going on in most of them. I'm just saying ....

I think sometimes people are so excited they just forget to check ahead of time, I admit I’ve had that happen a time or two. :-)
But, sometimes titles have been changed by posters, and even if you search, the same story doesn’t come up. And I swear there have been numerous times that I’ve done a complete search using proper headers, etc. and nothing shows up—I post a story, and sure enough someone will point out it’s already been posted. from the stories title in the textobx For those of you speaking English, that would be "story's" (possessive) not "stories" (plural).
And I can't find a textobx anywhere...

some stories need to be posted multiple times, especially ones that are Hugh and Series.
To: Scythian
I check in often, and so often the same story is posted over and over, within an hour or two. Then it will be reposted a couple of times the next day and the next. And of course people with creative titles complicate searching, trying to be cute.

It seems that perhaps there could be a script that could run that would automatically scan the forum for the same (or very similar) wording
before allowing an article to be posted. The poster would be advised that the article already exists or offer up several similar worded article posts and ask them to verify that it doesn't already exist on the site.
That might take some of the human "duh" factor out of the equation. Of course, I'm not a programmer and I don't know if this is even doable so I'll hush now...

Many people post the next days headlines and major stories when they come out at 1am EST. By the time many wake up and get online (9+ hours later), these stories get pushed out of the preview “boxes” on the right.
How many people here get their news by searching for a headline in the search feature or scrolling back thru 50+ articles to see what they missed? This place is not like Drudge where important stuff stays on the front page, once its out of the preview boxes, most people are not aware of it.
I don’t have an answer but I there are times I only become aware of a story on its second or third posting.

The 'small' search window above the right sidebar seems to work better than the 'main one' in the center.
I can find dupe threads with no problem with that one.

The search engine here doesnt always work. I thought everyone here knew thats why there are so many duplicate threads.I've noticed the same over the past few months. Sometimes "Search on Title" works, sometimes it doesn't... it's pretty frustrating.
The Keyword search usually seems to work, but I search on "Title" 90% of the time...
I haven't posted a new thread in ages... too much hassle.

First, make sure you are signed in.
Second, check the sidebars.
Third, check the activity and comments tabs.
Lastly, if similiar items are not found, then and only then, enter the title into the search engine.
Oh...this is already posted.

Sarah Palin created the concept of the “Chuck Norris joke” as a vetting process for “Sarah Palin jokes.”
She has been there, done that, and made the shirt by hand on her Eskimo loom and inkjet printer.

I agree. Duplicate threads are out of control now. The search function was better before it defaulted to keyword searching. Maybe a forced “search for existing threads” when posting a new topic would help.
