I agree with your zero-sum analysis, but let me clarify my point.

The leftist elitists want there to be a huge DIFFERENCE between what they can afford to do and what the commoner can afford to do.

They don’t necessarily want to have more luxuries, they just want to have WAY MORE THAN YOU do. And the best way to do that is to reduce your lifestyle through the use of coercion and pricing you out of your lifestyle.
